Knifeman wounded by police in eastern France after another was killed in Paris
A knife-wielding radicalised Islamist was shot and wounded in France today.
The 28-year-old man was threatening people in the eastern city of Metz before police fired bullets into his legs.
It comes just two days after a suspected terrorist was killed after stabbing a man to death in Paris.
The Metz knifeman had been shouting "Allahu Akbar" – Arabic for God is the greatest – around a housing estate in the Borny district.
"The man was known to be radicalised, and to have a personality disorder," said Christian Mercuri, the Metz public prosecutor.
Mr Mercuri said police had fired shots at the man so as to overpower him soon after midday, because he was threatening passers-by with a knife.
The man was on an ‘S-file’ in France, which means he was considered to be a serious threat to national security because of his obsession with radical Islam, including groups such as ISIS and Al-Qaeda.
It came as the suspected terrorist who went on the rampage in the southern Paris of Villejuif on Friday afternoon was named as Nathan Chiasson, 22.
The bare-footed Chiasson had also been shouting ‘Allahu Akbar’ when he went on the rampage, stabbing three people at random.
One, a 56-year-old man, died at the scene after trying to protect his wife, who suffered wounds to the neck.
She ended up in intensive care, along with a third victim who also suffered severe stab wounds.
The attack took place in the Hautes-Bruyères park, with Chiasson wearing a mock explosive vest.
After witnesses raised the alarm, Chiasson ran towards a Carrefour supermarket where he was shot at least six times by police and died at the scene.
Chiasson had converted to Islam in 2017, but an Iman had last week refused him permission to marry a Muslim woman.
The knife attack was similar to ones carried out by terrorists affiliated to Islamic State around Paris and other French cities and towns.
Paris prosecutor Laure Beccuau confirmed that a terrorist enquiry into Chiasson’s motives had been launched adding: "In his murderous journey, the suspect tried to attack others who managed to avoid him."
French Interior Minister Laurent Nunez and Paris police chief Didier Lallement later visited the scene of the crime, around seven miles from the centre of Paris.
Franck Le Bohellec, the Mayor of Villejuif, said: "In these difficult times, let's remain united and careful."
There have been a series of bomb, gun and knife attacks carried out by Islamic State and al-Qaeda operatives in France, dating back to early 2015
The deadliest single terrorist attack ever in the country came in November 2015 when 130 people were killed in Paris.
Suicide bombers pledging allegiance to ISIS targeted the Stade de France, cafes, restaurants and the Bataclan music venue, where 90 died.
