Lawyer of Ayia Napa ‘rape lie’ Brit, 19, reveals text messages that show how 11 Israeli men planned ‘orgy’ with teen – The Sun
A BRITISH teenager who is accused of making false gang-rape allegations while in Ayia Napa has appeared in court today after her lawyers revealed text messages showing how 11 Israeli men planned an 'orgy' with her.
The woman, 19, originally told Cypriot police that 12 Israeli men had taken it in turns to rape her in a hotel room but was later charged with 'public mischief' after cops said the teen had changed her statement.
The men were arrested on July 12 but later all released without charge, and doubt has since been cast on the woman's claims.
The teenager wept in court today as a statement was read out by her Lawyer, Ritsa Pekri, describing how the gang were 'going to do orgies' with the girl and had planned the attack in a 'bad and aggressive way."
The woman spent more than a month in Nicosia's general prison before being granted bail and claims that police coerced her into a confession.
Today she arrived for her court case with her parents and her British barrister Lewis Power QC and Michael Polak, from Justice Abroad, for the hearing at Famagusta law courts.
Mr Polak said: "She's obviously very traumatised as this has been going on since July and she just wants to go home.
"She is suffering from PTSD and she is seeing a psychologist who is treating her as she's been affected very badly.
"The police treated her appallingly. In six hours it went from a rape investigation to a case of investigating the victim after she retracted her statement but proper procedures were not followed.
"She has had to delay her University course and just wants to go home.
"She is a 19-year-old girl who had just come away on holiday and didn't expect any of this."
Speaking outside court the teenager's barrister Lewis Power QC said: "We are saying that she was pressurised. The case was not properly investigated.
"We don't want this to be long and protracted for her. She wants to go home but has her mother here with her."
The teenager wept in court today as a statement was read out by her Lawyer, Ritsa Pekri, describing how the gang were 'going to do orgies' with the girl and had planned the attack in a 'bad and aggressive way."
The trial has now been adjourned until October 15, after defence lawyers asked for more time to examine new evidence.
The teen's lawyers asked that she be set free after arguing that she had to return to the UK to start her studies, but the request was denied by judges.
Cypriot police have refused to comment so far.
'SHE WAS DENIED PROPER LEGAL ACCESS'
The British girl's defence will argue a mishandling of the teen's case after she endured eight-hours of police questioning, in which no lawyer was present.
It was also revealed that none of the interrogation was recorded by cops, standard practice here in the UK.
The British woman and her family have claimed that she was pressured to withdraw her complaint by detectives, who threatened to arrest her friends for “conspiracy” if she did not comply.
Polak added: "The way the Cyprus system treated her was appalling. She was held in custody for a month and is now on bail but still has to sign at a police station three times a week.
"No female police officer was present when she is supposed to have retracted her statement and she was denied proper legal access.
"The police treated her friends and her very badly and didn't investigate the rape at all properly. They were very keen to get things cleared up as they know this has a detrimental effect on the tourist industry which Cyprus relies on.
"They didn't even record anything she said she went from victim to suspect in just a few hours.
"They made her sign a statement at 2 am which she had no idea of what was being said.
"We have evidence from her friends that saw the Israeli boys were acting aggressively and in a bad manner texting each other saying they were all going to f**k her tonight."
The teenager first appeared in court back in July but the case was adjourned several times due to a change of lawyer and her defence looking to gather 'more evidence'.
Mr Power was been appointed by Justice Abroad in an attempt to work out whether police carried out proper procedures under Cypriot and European Law.
If found guilty of the charge of fomenting public mischief, the Brit could face up to a year in prison.
Since being granted bail she was taken to a safe house and asked to report to a local police station three times a week after having her passport seized.
The teen's parents have set up a Go Fund Me page in order to help cover legal costs, with most of the donations coming from outraged Israelis.
LEAKED SEX VIDEO
Lawyers also called for the 12 Israeli men to be prosecuted for sharing a video online of her having sex with members of the group.
A 34-second video was leaked to the website Pornhub as well as Israeli media which legal experts say was an act of “revenge porn”.
Under UK law revenge porn is “the sharing of private, sexual materials, either photos or videos, of another person without their consent and with the purpose of causing embarrassment or distress.”
It is also banned under EU law as well.
Andreas Pittadjis, the woman’s former lawyer, told The Times: “These were supposed to be private… and now the whole world has seen them.
“The circulation of this video is much more serious than the charges the girl faces and yet nobody is doing anything about it.”
As well as explicit sex being shown in the footage the authorities and local media say the men also make derogatory comments about the woman in Hebrew as they engaged in sex.
A source told the paper: “You can hear one of the boys saying in Hebrew, ‘You’re my whore, say you are my whore.’
VULNERABLE TEENAGERS
The Sun Online revealed that the teenager was lured to Cyprus by a firm blasted for putting youngsters at risk in 'unsafe' hotels for just £1.
Summer Takeover offers 'introduction' holidays for those looking for work in party hotspots like Ayia Napa, Kavos and Zante in exchange for a tiny token deposit.
But it has been slammed for leaving vulnerable teenagers stranded alone and jobless in 'high risk' hotels.
The girl jetted into Larnaca airport from Manchester at the beginning of July, heading for the two-star Pambos Napa Rocks resort.
The hotel, which can pack as many as 940 guests into its 240 rooms, is a huge draw for youngsters in Ayia Napa.
Famous for its pool parties, its biggest clients are young Russians, Swedes, Brits and Israelis – all determined to enjoy sun, sea and sex.
As part of her package, the girl was given a room for 28 days, shared with up to three other girls.
