Ms Truss also discussed how she and her aides prepared for the worst possible news.
She said: ‘I knew I would have to address the nation. I knew the situation was very, very serious, and it was really just getting through those crucial moments and making sure that we did all we could to pay tribute to the Queen, but also to make sure there was a smooth transition to support the new King.’
Earlier today, Prince Harry said the late Queen is ‘looking down on us all’ and is ‘happy we’re together’ as he returned to the UK for the first time in three months to attend an annual charity awards ceremony.
The Duke of Sussex arrived in Britain to attend the WellChild Awards at the Hurlingham Club in London – an event he ‘looks forward to each year’.
Former Prime Minister Liz Truss said the Queen ‘was absolutely on top of what was happening’
‘As you know, I was unable to attend the awards last year as my grandmother passed away,’ he told the the audience, referencing how he pulled out of last year’s ceremony following news the queen was seriously ill, and travelled to Balmoral -separately from the rest of the royal family – to attend her deathbed.
‘As you also probably know, she would have been the first person to insist that I still come to be with you all instead of going to her. And that’s precisely why I know, exactly one year on, she is looking down on all of us tonight, happy we’re together continuing to spotlight such an incredible community.’
