Parents charged with killing five-month-old baby who was found starved to death at home
THE parents of a five-month-old baby who was found starved to death at home have been charged with his murder, officials have said.
Shederick Dashun Gallman, 22, and Natricia Wright, 21, from Chester County, South Carolina, were arrested by deputies and charged with homicide and child abuse.
The boy, whose name has not been released, was found dead on May 20 at the home on Second Street, and had suffered from chronic malnutrition, local paper The Herald reported.
The child died after the parents showed “extreme indifference to human life by failing to provide adequate food or health care,” according to arrest warrants obtained by the paper.
Gallman and Wright were arrested in Union County, North Carolina and are expected to appear in a North Carolina courtroom on Friday, officials said.
Both are being held without bond at the Union County, N.C jail.
They are currently waiting an extradition hearing, Chester County Sheriff's Office said.
This arrest is the result of an investigation by the Chester County Sheriff’s Office, the Chester County Coroner’s Office, and the SC Law Enforcement Division (SLED.
It's not known how long law enforcement had been seeking Gallman and Wright.
Homicide by child abuse is defined in South Carolina causing "the death of a child under the age of eleven while committing child abuse or neglect, and the death occurs under circumstances manifesting an extreme indifference to human life,” or a person who “knowingly aids and abets another person to commit child abuse or neglect, and the child abuse or neglect results in the death of a child under the age of eleven.”
The charge carries a potential punishment of up to life in prison for a conviction under South Carolina law.
