Pippa Middleton displays show of support for father-in-law at wedding

Pippa Middleton dazzles at friend’s wedding and displays cryptic show of support for beleaguered father-in-law David Matthews amid police probe

In a scarlet gown and bold drop earrings, Pippa Middleton once again proves she is not afraid to make a fashion statement.

But it was her little mother-of-pearl clutch bag – decorated with waves, glittery sand and the words ‘Eden Rock’ – that made the biggest statement of all.

Attending an exclusive wedding in Lake Como at the weekend, the mother-of-three, 39, appeared to make a show of support for her father-in-law, who is currently under investigation by French police.

Eden Rock is the name of the high-society Caribbean hotel owned by David Matthews, father of her husband James, 48.

In March, the Mail on Sunday revealed that detectives in Paris from a unit that probes alleged crimes against minors were investigating the 79-year-old former racing driver.

The hotel where the wedding was held is the largest private residence on the lake. It was used as a location for the 2021 movie House of Gucci

The bride at the wedding was London-based nutritional therapist and influencer Belle Porter (pictured on a boat on Lake Como with husband Max Robinson)

It came five years after he was charged with raping a 16-year-old girl on two occasions between 1998 and 1999 – first in Paris and then in St Barts, where his £5,000-a-night hotel is situated.

Mr Matthews is understood to remain under investigation after years of judicial delays. He vehemently denies any wrongdoing.

In 2018, a spokesman for the Middleton family said David ‘categorically denies the allegation and unequivocally contests the untrue and scandalous accusation’.

The Princess of Wales’s sister was seen with the same bag – a £400 limited edition from designer Elizabeth Sutton – last year as she and her billionaire hedge fund manager husband attended a show at London’s Royal Albert Hall.

A dozen years after her figure-hugging ivory maid of honour gown caused a sensation when her sister Kate married Prince William, Pippa was once again the centre of attention.

This time the bride getting married at a villa on the shores of stunning Lake Como was London-based nutritional therapist and influencer Belle Porter.

The ceremony took place at the picturesque Villa Balbiano, where a three-day wedding package costs around £1.3million.

Pippa and James Matthews arrived on Friday and stayed in one of the three suites at the Grand Hotel Tremezzo.

Celebrations kicked off on Friday night in the garden of the hotel with a welcome party for which the dress code was ‘pink, mood Barbie’. She is understood to have worn a pink outfit and her husband beige.

Footage shared widely on social media by the hotel, the bride and guests showed the true scale of the extravagant wedding – and Pippa herself was filmed letting her hair down and dancing among the crowds at the wild party in her scarlet dress.

Pictures shared from the wedding show how guests watched on as the bride and groom tied the knot to the backdrop of the mountains surrounding Lake Como.

An incredible light show featuring fireworks and even the newlyweds’ faces was projected onto the facade of the hotel as the couple pulled out all the stops for their big day.

The bride herself, dressed in a stunning white dress, was filmed being thrown up in the air by wealthy guests who had travelled to Italy for the special day.

The couple also took a boat out on to the picturesque lake as colourful pyrotechnics and confetti exploded into the air in front of stunned guests.

Pictures of the menu shared on social media showed that the wedding guests, which included Pippa, were treated to sliced grass-fed filet mignon with organic asparagus, tomato, sauteed potatoes from Trentino and baby carrot.

The fish option was wild seabass with fresh tomato emulsion and basil from the garden, while the vegetation option was chargrilled cauliflower steak with tahini and pomegranate.

Pippa and her husband James were pictured enjoying themselves as they spoke to guests and the Princess of Wales’ sister was caught snapping a photo with her phone as she watched the memorable ceremony.

The couple were also seen up on the hotel balcony as they made the most of their luxurious holiday.

Pippa and her husband James were last pictured in public enjoying a cosy date at Wimbledon earlier this summer. The 39-year-old is an avid tennis fan and has been a regular fixture in the stands in previous years.

They joined a star-studded crowd at SW19 in July, including Queen Camilla, Mary Berry and Peter Phillips, who were all placed in the Royal Box.

Pippa recently relocated from a £17milion townhouse in Chelsea to a 30-room Berkshire retreat with her husband.

But the Princess of Wales’ younger sister could one day be tempted to move to the Scottish highlands when her billionaire husband inherits his family’s Glen Affric Estate.

James’s father David bought the estate in 2018 along with the main house, Affric Lodge, set amid 10,000 acres of a peninsula and a loch of the same name.

Glen Affric is located in the south-west of the village of Cannich in the Highland region of Scotland, some 15 miles west of Loch Ness.

Mr Matthews, the son of a Rotherham coal miner, amassed a £40million fortune by selling a secondhand car business and moving into property development and hotel ownership.

After leaving school, he became an apprentice garage mechanic. At 19 he sold cars door-to-door and, in his spare time, pursued his love of motor racing. His first marriage was to Anita Taylor, one of Britain’s first women racing drivers. They had a daughter, Nina, but divorced three years later in 1969.

He married for a second time to artist Jane Parker, now 75, and after moving out of their bungalow in Rotherham the couple lived on a 30-acre, 18th Century estate in rural Lincolnshire. As their fortunes rose, there were spells living in Paris, then Monaco.

They had three sons, James, Made in Chelsea star Spencer and Michael – who died when he was 22 during an expedition on Mount Everest.

Mr Matthews ventured into hotels, buying up Eden Rock in St Barts in 1995. He and his wife now live on the island.
