Priti Patel slams Extinction Rebellion protesters for their illegal and dangerous behaviour – The Sun

HOME Secretary Priti Patel has slammed Extinction Rebellion for their unlawful and dangerous behaviour.

Speaking about the eco-warriors Ms Patel praised the police for taking action and arresting protesters who were behaving badly.

Speaking to The Sun’s Executive Editor Dan Wootton on talkRADIO she said: "You know we have such great freedoms in this country but I do think where you have people behaving unlawfully, where you have people causing such huge disruption across our streets and not enabling people to get on with their daily lives that is simply wrong."

She added: "People have the right to protest peacefully but when it comes to unlawful behaviour the police are doing the right thing in terms of making sure the law enforcement is doing the right thing and they are arresting people that are being far too disruptive and behaving completely in the wrong way."

This evening a protester was arrested three hours after scaling Big Ben in The Houses of Parliament and yesterday members of the group held up tubes at Canning Town and Shadwell.

Speaking about the police's action against Extinction Rebellion Ms Patel said: "But what I would say and this afternoon I have met police officers around Westminster who have had to put up with the most appalling abuse themselves through many of those protests and protesters who have just been behaving absolutely dreadfully.

"All credit to them the police, they have been making arrests, rightfully, when people have been behaving unlawfully."

PRITI'S PRIDE IN BORIS

HOME Security Priti Patel has saluted The Sun’s front page urging MPs to back Boris Johnson’s Brexit deal.

Speaking to The Sun’s Executive Editor Dan Wootton on talkRADIO, she also spoke of her pride in the Prime Minister, describing him as “phenomenal”.

Ms Patel said: “I think that newspaper headline is absolutely spot on.

“By getting Brexit done as a country we can move forward in a totally, totally different way in terms of now focusing on what I call the social priorities – investment in public services, in police officers, protection officers, people, community and country.”

The MP for Witham told how she is looking forward to getting the deal done and encouraged her colleagues to vote it through parliament this weekend.

She said: "This is the best deal and the fact that it has been negotiated pretty assiduously should give colleagues, my colleagues, every certainty and every reassurance that if we are committed to delivering the referendum mandate, if we are going to be true to the 17.4 million who voted to leave.

"This is the right and responsible way forward. To Leave with a deal so we can have that transition so we can give business certainty, so we can give confidence back to investors overseas to come back and invest in the UK."

The new deal, according to Ms Patel, also ensures there will be a frictionless border between Ireland and Northern Ireland and will enable the UK to grow together as a whole.

And on Boris, she added: “I feel a great deal of Pride for the Prime Minister for what he has achieved because it has not been easy and as I’ve said previously, three months ago, four months ago no one thought this was achievable.”
