Road signs ‘put drivers at risk’ because many are hidden behind overgrown trees or have large sections missing, safety campaigners say

  • Drivers are missing out on important information because many signs are hidden
  • Transport Focus blames Highways England for the shoddy upkeep of the signs

Motorists are being put at risk because of the dilapidated state of road signs, campaigners said last night.

Drivers are missing out on important information because many signs are hidden behind overgrown trees, or have large sections missing.

Transport Focus, the passenger watchdog, blames Highways England for the shoddy upkeep of signs on 4,300 miles of motorways and A roads.

Drivers are missing out on important information because many signs are hidden behind overgrown trees, or have large sections missing.

The organisation wants drivers to report examples as part of its Sort My Sign campaign.

Transport Focus chief executive Anthony Smith said: ‘We want to hear from road users about signs and information that aren’t up to scratch.

‘We’ll use what you say to press Highways England to make journeys easier and safer.

‘There is nothing more frustrating than missing your turnoff because the sign was hidden behind a tree or missing crucial information.

‘While we have some of the safest roads there are still too many signs which are broken, confusing or out of date. If it’s not clear, it’s not safe.’
