Second night of looting in NYC targets major chains in Herald Square, Bronx
Looters left parts of New York City in ruins Tuesday morning following a second-straight night of mostly unchecked raids on stores, including Macy’s flagship in Herald Square and shops in Times Square.
The mess of bashed-in windows, broken glass and pilfered goods extended to the Bronx, where thieves broke into pharmacies, banks and other small businesses along Fordham Road and Burnside Avenue and set fire to trash cans. Businesses in the Grand Concourse section were also destroyed.
Herald Square was hit hard — with video showing hundreds of looters streaming into Macy’s iconic 34th Street location, which had boarded up its windows Sunday ahead of the anticipated destruction.
An Urban Outfitters on 35th Street and Broadway had its windows smashed in, revealing cleaned-out clothing racks and empty hangers strewn about.
The destruction extended to Rockefeller Center — where the Nintendo store was looted — and Times Square, where storefronts were smashed and ransacked. Looters also broke into a Microsoft store in Midtown before a confrontation with police.
A Sephora on Fifth Avenue and 19th Street was breached by a trio of suspect looters, who didn’t realize NYPD cops were waiting inside.
Cops made several arrests at the Balenciaga store on Mercer Street in Soho.
Meanwhile, dozens of people tried to breach Queens Center Mall Monday afternoon — but couldn’t get through the mall’s boarded up windows and rolled-down gates.
Thousands took to the city streets again Monday to protest George Floyd’s police-involved death. Anti-cop violence continued as well, with an NYPD officer attacked in the Bronx in a caught-on-camera beatdown.
The looting began Sunday night amid Floyd protests with stores in Soho primarily targeted.
