Soldier, 23, hanged himself in barracks two days after his girlfriend dumped him, inquest hears

  • His girlfriend Madeline Iles had broken up with him two days before in 2021

A 23-year-old British soldier hanged himself in his barracks two days after his girlfriend broke up with him, an inquest heard.

Jake Llewellyn Plumb was found hanged in his room on November 4, 2021, at Lucknow Barracks, Wiltshire, after friends told colleagues they had received a message warning he was going to kill himself.

Mr Plumb, of the 1st Battalion Royal Welsh, sent a friend a picture of himself on Snapchat before confirming he was going to hang himself when asked.

He was then found dead two days later after a female friend became concerned after hearing nothing from him and accessed his room with a master key.

Senior coroner David Ridley concluded a verdict of suicide at Salisbury Coroner’s Court, Wiltshire, today.

Fusilier Jake Llewellyn Plumb was found hanged in his room on November 4, 2021, at Lucknow Barracks, Wiltshire

Mr Plumb, of the 1st Battalion Royal Welsh, sent a friend a picture on Snapchat, showing a part of his neck and shoulder with a wall in the background saying ‘I’m hanging’

He was also ‘gutted’ he was unable to join the rest of his company on their upcoming deployment to Estonia because he was waiting for a dental procedure, Salisbury Coroner’s Court heard.

His girlfriend Madeline Iles had broken up with him just two days before his death, the inquest heard.

Garth McLean, who was ‘good mates’ with Mr Plumb, described him as a ‘class bloke’ but revealed his friend’s disappointment at missing out on deployment to Estonia as he waited for a dental procedure.

Giving evidence, he said: ‘Jake got along well with everyone. He was gutted he wouldn’t be able to come out with us.

‘At the same the wait for the dental was long, he had a hunch he would be put into a different company and he didn’t want that at all but he said he’d just go with it.’

On the evening of November 2, Mr McLean had been out with Mr Plumb – who didn’t drink – but said his friend didn’t seem himself as ‘something wasn’t quite right’.

He said: ‘He wouldn’t divulge. He was never a depressed person – he was outgoing.’

Mr McLean revealed he had not been aware he had split up with his girlfriend.

Recording a verdict of suicide, Mr Ridley said: ‘Following concerns for his welfare, Jake was found deceased. He made a concerted effort to end his life.

‘Why? I don’t know. Any conclusion there would be pure speculation. Any reason, I’m afraid he took with him.’

He offered his condolences to Mr Plumb’s family who attended his inquest, as did a representative from the Ministry of Defence.
