Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, 87, hospitalized for gallbladder infection – The Sun
RUTH Bader Ginsburg was hospitalized with a gallbladder infection on Tuesday, but the Supreme Court justice will continue to phone in for arguments.
The 87-year-old Ginsburg, who has been treated for cancer four times, underwent non-surgical treatment for an infection caused by a gallstone.
Her ailment was described by Court officials as acute cholecystitis.
She is resting comfortably but may stay in the hospital for a couple of days.
She initially received medical care on Monday, when the gallstone was first diagnosed.
Ginsburg had taken part in the Court’s telephone arguments Monday and Tuesday, and will do so again on Wednesday.
The coronavirus outbreak has forced justices to resort to telephone sessions.
The New York City-born jurist was most recently treated for cancer in August when she underwent radiation for a tumor on her pancreas, and her most recent hospital stay was in November.
The liberal icon previously bounced back from lung surgery to remove cancerous growths in December 2018.
Her recovery forced her to miss court arguments for the first time since she became a justice.
She usually works out with a personal trainer at the court, even during the pandemic, according to officials.
Ginsburg became a justice in 1993 after being appointed to the country's highest court by President Bill Clinton.
Last month she wrote a dissenting opinion when the Supreme Court denied Wisconsin Gov Tony Evers' request to postpone in-person voting for the primary.
it was a 5-4 decision.
“The Court’s suggestion that the current situation is not ‘substantially different’ from ‘an ordinary election’ boggles the mind,” she wrote, according to The New York Post.
“Now, under this Court’s order, tens of thousands of absentee voters, unlikely to receive their ballots in time to cast them, will be left quite literally without a vote.”
She has said she would like to serve until she is 90.
