Teacher, 49, who married ex-pupil and had two children with her faces investigation
AN RE teacher who married an ex-pupil and had two children with her is now facing an investigation over having an “inappropriate relationship”.
Gavin Dunsmuir, 49, is claimed to have become too close to Megan Reid, now 23, while he was working at Largs Academy in Ayrshire, Scotland.
He was allegedly spotted visiting a pub with the then schoolgirl and other young people between March and August 2015.
Dunsmuir is also accused of taking Reid to a colleague’s house and letting her spend time with his daughter, the Daily Record reports.
The religious education teacher, from Kilmarnock went on to leave his wife and started living with Reid, who was said to be pregnant with his child in March 2018.
Although there is a 26-year age gap between the pair, they got married earlier this year and now have two kids together.
The General Teaching Council for Scotland (GTCS) will also hear evidence that Dunsmuir allegedly had unconsensual sex with a child on two occasions between 1991 and 1993.
The investigation will also consider if he is fit to continue his profession as a teacher.
A hearing notice by the watchdog says: “On two separate occasions between 1991 and 1993, in the knowledge that Child A was under the legal age limit to provide consent, you did have sexual intercourse with Child A without her consent.
“Between March 2015 and August 2015, whilst employed as a teacher by North Ayrshire Council at School A, you did form an inappropriate relationship with a pupil, in that you did: attend a public house with said pupil and former pupils of School A; take said pupil to the home of a colleague; and spend time with said pupil in the company of your daughter.”
PROBE IN 2018
A probe into Dunsmuir’s conduct was launched in 2018 but it never concluded.
At the time former colleagues gave evidence against the teacher, who was not present and not represented, expressing concerns about how close he appeared to be with Reid.
An off-duty teacher raised concerns after they were seen “looking like a couple” at the Lounge bar in Largs.
The same teacher also reported seeing Reid sitting with Dunsmuir alone “on a daily basis”.
The hearing also heard from another colleague who said he was “speechless” after Dunsmuir turned up at his house with Reid in the car.
When Dunsmuir was asked what was going on he said he was planning to use the teenager as a babysitter for his daughter.
Dunsmuir’s wife found out about the couple’s alleged relationship when her daughter told her that her husband had a girlfriend.
She then raised the alarm with the school and North Ayrshire Council who said Dunsmuir no longer worked for them.
Dunsmuir is currently subject to a temporary restriction order by the GTCS.
The full hearing is due to take place between July 26 and 30 where his fitness to remain a teacher will be decided.
