Volunteer, 28, in Oxford coronavirus vaccine trial dies in Brazil

A young volunteer in the Oxford University Covid-19 vaccine trial has died in Brazil, the country’s health authority has confirmed.

According to Brazilian news site Globo, the 28-year-old participant passed away ‘as a result of complications from Covid-19’ on Thursday.

Brazil’s health authority, Anvisa, and an Oxford University spokesperson said the clinical trials will continue in the country.

Anvisa nor the laboratory have confirmed whether the volunteer received a placebo dose or the real vaccine.

However, according to Globo, sources linked to the international study said the participant received a placebo.

The University of Oxford said an independent review had revealed there were no safety concerns with the vaccine, following the death of the participant.

A spokesperson said: ‘Following careful assessment of this case in Brazil, there have been no concerns about safety of the clinical trial and the independent review in addition to the Brazilian regulator have recommended that the trial should continue.’
