When is Carnival Row season 2 out on Amazon Prime and is Katy Perry joining the cast?
CARNIVAL Row season 2 is hot on everyone’s lips, following the release of the first series on Amazon Prime at the end of August.
Now, the streaming giant has confirmed a second series is in the works. Here is what you need to know…
When is Carnival Row season 2 out?
Carnival Row, starring Hollywood’s Orlando Bloom and supermodel Cara Delevingne, will be back for a second season.
Amazon Prime announced the show had been renewed in July, 2019, before the first season launched on Friday, August 30.
Sadly, no official release date has been confirmed by the streaming service yet but the second series is expected to premiere in the summer of 2020.
However, the first series took two years to launch after it was announced in 2017, therefore the second season could air in 2021.
Filming for the second season is due to start in late September, 2019 and it will be released on Amazon Prime.
What will happen in Carnival Row season 2?
Set in a fantasy world of Victorian London, Carnival Row follows the lives of mythological creatures – known as the fae – who seek refuge after being forced out of their own realms.
Rycroft Philostrate (played by Orlando Bloom), a human detective, investigates mysterious murders on London’s Carnival Row when he comes into contact with Vignette (Cara Delevingne) who is a fairy (also known as a fae).
Yet, Rycroft learned a shock truth of his own – he is half-human and half-fae, as the long-lost son of Aisling (Erika Stárková) and Absalom Breakspear (Jared Harris).
Aisling and Breakspear’s love affair would have never worked, so when Philo was born, his wings were cut off by Dr Morange (Gregory Gudgeon).
But when Absalom’s wife Piety Breakspear (Indira Varma) discovered the truth about her husband, she created a Dark Asher to track down Rycroft.
Later, with the help of Vignette, Rycroft defeated Piety and the Dark Asher, killing them both.
But with Absalom and Piety dead, Sophie Longerbane (Caroline Ford) and Jonah (Arty Froushan) took control of The Burgue.
They decided to take out all their enemies – The faeries – leading to Rycroft making a decision between identifying as a ‘critch’ or a human-being.
Eventually, he decided to side with the fae and the series ends with him Vignette and the faes in what appeared to be a concentration camp.
Season two of Carnival Row is likely to see the fae’s take on Jonah and Sophie, as they fight for their freedom.
The upcoming series is expected to continue to touch on political themes, such as immigration, war and the refugee crisis.
In an interview with Variety, Orlando said: “It’s so current and topical. It sort of addresses a lot of what we’re experiencing today.
“We can explore these issues that are going on in the world today with a kind of empathy and objective quality that doesn’t quite feel like it’s banging you over the head.”
Is Katy Perry joining the cast of Carnival Row season 2?
Katy Perry, who is engaged to Carnival Row's lead actor Orlando, could be joining her fiancée on the set of the Amazon series.
Showrunner Marc Guggenheim is eager to have the pop star make a cameo appearance in the upcoming series.
Speaking to PEOPLE.com about the possibility of Katy featuring in the new season, he said: “I was talking to Orlando the other day. I’m like, ‘For season 2, we gotta get Katy coming by the set.
“It’d be a lot of fun. I actually think Katy would be a great fairy.”
He added: “I may or may not have suggested the possibility of her doing a cameo.
“And I said to Orlando, ‘I wouldn’t be doing my job if I didn’t at least float that as a concept.'”
