Judge slaps down Donald Trump and tells him he isn't immune from prosecution
Donald Trump was slapped down by a judge who said being President of the United States does not render him immune from prosecution.
Judge Victor Marrero rejected Trump’s previous argument Monday that his job is sufficient to block a subpoena (legal demand) seeking access to his tax returns.
The subpoena in question was issued weeks ago by the Manhattan District Attorney’s office as part of a probe into hush money payments to two women the president reportedly cheated on his wife Melania with.
One of the women, porn star Stormy Daniels, claims she had a one night stand with Donald Trump in 2006.
The other – former Playboy Playmate Karen McDougall, says she had a longer romantic affair with President Trump around the same time.
Prosecutors are seeking eight years of personal and business tax returns to try and establish where that cash came from.
Investigators want to try and establish whether Trump himself or senior executives in his organization committed any financial crimes in making the alleged pay-offs.
Explaining why he rejected Trump’s claim to immunity, Marrero said he could not endorse such a ‘categorical and limitless assertion of presidential immunity from judicial process.’
He added that allowing Trump to avoid any such probe ‘would constitute an overreach of executive power.’
President Trump has repeatedly denied cheating on his wife, and all allegations of financial impropriety.
His legal team has already filed an appeal against Monday’s judgement.
