A creative mother has spared herself the cost of a new sofa by refurbishing her old couch for £10.
Kate Fort, from Southend-on-Sea, thought the white leather sofa she’s had for 10 years was beyond repair when it started to peel, leaving a growing patch of unsightly creases and tears.
But she didn’t want to splash out on a new sofa until her two-year-old is a bit older and less likely to draw on fabric with pens.
After filing down the surface to make sure it was smooth, Kate applied a £10 leather colourant with a damp sponge to salvage the material and restore some of its prior glory.
She shared her before and after pictures on the Hinch Army Cleaning Tips Facebook group, and members were deeply impressed with the transformation.
Kate Fort, from Southend-on-Sea, explained she didn’t want to fork out on a new leather sofa after years of use damaged hers. Pictured: the damaged sofa before

‘I’m so impressed. I didn’t hold out much hope for my beloved leather sofa. Its high traffic use and my children jumping on it over the last 10 years has taken its toll,’ Kate explained.
‘My youngest is only two, and we still have the odd creative pen moment.
‘So I’m very reluctant to get a new sofa yet. I decided to try and restore the sofa myself and while it’s not perfect, I’m very happy with the results.
‘It really is a lot better than it was! Just thought I’d share in case anyone else is experiencing their leather sofa peeling, but are not ready to part with it just yet! I’m very happy with my results that cost me only £10.’
Kate (pictured) explained she did not have a lot of hope that the tric would work, but was pleasantly surprised when her sofa looked almost brand new
The £10 leather colourant from the Leather Clinic costs £9.95 and comes in several different colours
‘It’s not perfect but it’s definitely a temporary solution to tie me over, that will save me thousands of £££ for now,’ she said.
Kate used a 125ml bottle of leather colourant in ‘cream’ from The Leather Clinic, priced at £9.95.
Using a damp sponge to apply the colour, Kate explained she relied on a YouTube tutorial for instructions.
In order to evenly apply the paint and to make sure it stuck, she gently rubbed over it using a small nail file until the surface was smooth.
People were deeply impressed with the results, with many saying they’d be trying the product themselves
People were so impressed with her result, some wanted to try the method immediately.
‘That’s really impressive! Mine’s 25-years-old and has split now, but I wish I’d known about that stuff years ago,’ one wrote.
‘That’s amazing. Might have to get some of this,’ another wrote.
‘Wow.. that’s amazing, wish I’d known about this before .. dayyymmmnnn,’ said a very enthusiastic one.
‘Fantastic result! Totally transformed,’ applauded one.
‘OMG. I’m so glad I came across this. My sofa is the same. It’s only on the arms, it’s just peeling off all the time. Will definitely try this stuff,’ said another.
