'You' Season 3: Will Netflix's Penn Badgley Series Have a Third Installment?

Unless you’ve been hiding under a boulder, you’ve probably heard of the breakout series, You. This thriller, originally airing on Lifetime for its first season, has just dropped Season 2 at its new home on Netflix. There’s bombshell twists and turns in this Penn Badgley series, and fans are wondering if Netflix plans to produce a third installment.

What is ‘You’ about?

You is a thriller created and executive produced by Greg Berlanti and Sera Gamble. It’s not produced by Netflix — it comes from Warner Horizon and Berlanti Productions — but has found its permanent home on Netflix’s streaming service.

It’s technically considered a drama, with suspense and tech, and is based on the novel of the same name by Caroline Kepnes.

Season one introduces audiences to a brilliant bookstore manager named Joe Goldberg (Badgley). He encounters a young female writer and becomes obsessed with aligning their paths.

Using social media, he turns sinister as he deploys all methods available to him in order to get closer to her. It turns out there may be nothing he wouldn’t do for love.

It’s one part suspense, one part thriller, and two parts love story. You weaves an interesting web among engaging characters and a ridiculously complicated set of situations.

Fans are gripped early on in season one, as they follow Joe Goldberg along his path. They root for him and then find themselves in turmoil as he quietly assumes the role of a potential bad apple. He’s a charming guy with a skewed moral compass.

What critics and reviews say about ‘You’

Rotten Tomatoes calls You a thrilling drama that marries with a social media horror story. It has the ability to work its way under the audience’s skin, and stays there, in a fun and trashy kind of way. It has a 93% fresh rating.

Indiewire.com gives it an A- and cites the show’s ability to succeed with its supporting character roles. They also call it a dangerously compelling, fish-out-of-water story.

Common Sense Media calls it a take on stalking from the stalker’s point of view.

Netflix, in true binge-watch fashion, dropped the second season of You on December 26th. We won’t dive into any spoilers just yet but be prepared for an explosive season and jaw-dropping conclusion.

Many fans are already taking to social media, asking burning questions. It has everyone wondering, and secretly hoping for confirmation of a Season Three.

Will ‘You’ Season 3 be a reality?

Fans who have reached the end of season two will be left wanting more of their dangerously charming Joe and will need to know what’s next. This latest finale could just be a taste of what a potential third installment will bring – and it’s best that audiences buckle up.

There’s no official confirmation or guarantee from Netflix for another season. But, based on its success so far, chances are good. Also, a recent tax California tax credit has been awarded, providing added incentives, to the tune of $7.213 million, to taking Joe Goldberg to the next level.

Plus, Gamble, the co-creator of You, told Cosmopolitan UK that “absolutely it could come back” in January 2019.

“First of all, it’s up to the powers that be,” Gamble said. “We hope that a lot of people will watch the show and that it gets to continue. I will say that we have an idea for season 3 that is SO exciting that people talk about it in the [writer’s] room everyday. So my fingers are crossed. I’ll just say, I hope we get the chance to keep making the show.”
