'Sons Of Anarchy' Star Charlie Hunnam Still Can't Bring Himself To Watch 'Fifty Shades'

There was a time not too long ago when Charlie Hunnam was the face of the Fifty Shades of Grey franchise. Hunnam famously backed out of the role weeks before filming got underway, and though he has gone on to make a name for himself on the big screens, he still cannot bring himself to watch the erotic drama. It has been four years since Hunnam turned his back on the part, but has he gotten over it?

Hunnam opens up about back out of ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’

Hunnam was asked about backing out of E.L. James’ hit franchise while preparing for the release of The Lost City of Z in 2017. The actor revealed that he is close friends with director Sam Taylor-Johnson and that the entire experience was a bit “traumatic” for him. For that reason, the Sons of Anarchy alum has elected not to watch the movie.

“I haven’t,” Charlie Hunnam shared. “I developed a friendship with [Fifty Shades of Grey director Sam Taylor-Johnson], but that was a somewhat traumatic experience for me. I didn’t want to open that wound.”

Hunnam was cast to play the part of Christian Grey in 2013. Theactor, however, committed to too many projects at the same time and was forcedto turn it down because of a scheduling conflict.

Director Taylor-Johnson quickly moved on and replaced Hunnam withJamie Dornan, leaving fans to forever speculate how the movies would haveturned out if Hunnam had not backed out. It also left fans wondering if therewas more to Hunnam’s exit than he originally let on.

Why did Charlie Hunnam leave ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’?

When Hunnam announced his exit from Fifty Shades of Grey,there were rumors that he had left because of creative differences. A few yearslater, the actor clarified that it was his schedule that prevented him fromkeeping the role.

At the time, Hunnam was filming the final season of Sons of Anarchy and had already committed to Guillermo Del Toro’s film, Crimson Peak. Hunnam attempted to do all three projects at once, but the schedule was just too much to pull off.

To make things more complicated, Fifty Shades was filmed in Vancouver, which meant Hunnam would have had to fly to three separate shooting locations within the same month. He also would have had a day or two in between shoots to get into character, which just isn’t enough time when you’re talking about juggling three different characters. After Hunnam backed out of Fifty Shades, he admitted that it was one of the worst experiences of his life.

Hunnam opens up about sex scenes

Being a part of Sons of Anarchy for seven seasons, Hunnam has had plenty of experience when it comes to sex scenes. Playing Christian Grey in Fifty Shades of Grey, however, would have been completely different. According to Indie Wire, Charlie Hunnam previously admitted that he does not enjoy performing sex scenes because he is a germaphobe and does not like kissing anyone who isn’t his longtime girlfriend, Morgana McNelis.

Hunnam then explained how it is difficult to act scenes that areso intimate because you still have to stay within certain boundaries. He alsoconfessed that McNelis is not a fan of sex scenes, so it is probably a goodthing that he was forced to turn down the Fifty Shades role.

That said, we are pretty confident that Hunnam could have handledhimself just fine as Christian Grey, and fans would not have complained.

Does Charlie Hunnam regret turning down Christian Grey?

Earlier this year, Hunnam once again discussed turning down the role and said that he has no regrets about how everything turned out. When it comes to fan speculation, the Triple Frontier star revealed that his version of Christian Grey would have been completely different than Dornan’s portrayal of the billionaire, which makes it hard to compare the two. He also stated that he still has not sat down and watched the movie because he wants to avoid analyzing Dornan’s performance.

Charlie Hunnam also revealed that he decided to back out of therole because his vision of Christian Grey was not what Taylor-Johnson and Jameswanted. At the end of the day, it made more sense for Hunnam to turn down thepart than make everyone else miserable.
