What’s wrong with Emmerdale’s Lisa Dingle revealed ahead of final episode

Emmerdale residents finally learned what's wrong with Lisa Dingle in recent scenes, as she confirmed to her family she was dying from a terminal heart condition, amyloidosis,.

Charity Dingle was devastated to discover her aunt had been diagnosed with the condition, with Lisa making contact with her and asking her to help plan her funeral.

While her husband Zak Dingle knew about her illness, they hadn’t told daughter Belle that she was dying until scenes that aired on Monday May 13th.

But what exactly is wrong with Lisa, and when does she die? Here’s what we know…

What is wrong with Lisa Dingle?

Lisa Dingle has been diagnosed with a condition called amyloidosis in her heart, and recently revealed she is terminally ill.

She suffered a heart attack last year after her drink was spiked by Liv Flaherty, while she has also suffered with angina in the past. Lisa confirmed to Liv that the incident was not to blame.

It’s thought she has known for a while, having been living in Scotland for almost a year with husband Zak prior to their recent return this month.

What is amyloidosis, and what are the symptoms?

Lisa described the condition as meaning there was protein in places it shouldn’t be, and that it was killing her.

In Lisa's instance, the build-up of protein is in her heart and, with there nothing more doctors can do for her, she explained it would eventually lead to heart failure.

She had been having chemotherapy treatment, only to learn it hadn’t worked and there was no more that could be done for her.

According to the NHS website, amyloidosis is a "build-up of an abnormal protein called amyloid in organs and tissues throughout the body.

"The build-up of amyloid proteins (deposits) can make it difficult for the organs and tissues to work properly."

Amyloidosis isn't always fatal in patients, but is serious and can lead to life-threatening organ failure.

Symptoms can include severe fatigue, shortness of breath, joint pain, sudden weight loss, severe weakness and tingling and/or numbness in the lower body.

Lisa, whose illness is linked to her cardiac issues, admitted she had been disguising her symptoms as angina to her loved ones.

When does Lisa die, and when is her final episode?

It’s not been confirmed when Lisa’s final episode will air, but it will be at some point this year.

Lisa revealed to her loved ones upon her return that she has "months" to live.

She and Zak will tie the knot for the second time next week, wanting to spend the time she has left together.

When asked by Charity in March, she said the doctor told her she had some time left and that it wasn’t “immediate”.

What happened to Zak?

Zak moved away with Lisa to Scotland, and the pair were not planning on returning until they were ready to deal with Lisa’s diagnosis.

In real life, actor Steve Halliwell has been off the show after undergoing a heart procedure, having a pacemaker fitted.

He confirmed he would be back this year, and has since made his return with Jane Cox who plays Lisa.

Who is Lisa Dingle? Who plays Lisa?

Lisa is the wife of Zak Dingle and mother to Belle Dingle, while Debbie is her granddaughter.

Her stepchildren include Cain Dingle and Sam Dingle, while Charity, Marlon and Chas Dingle are among her other family.

Lisa is played by actress Jane Cox.

Emmerdale airs weeknights at 7pm on ITV with an extra episode at 8pm on Thursdays.
