Sophie Turner Shuts Down the Fan Petition to Redo Game of Thrones Season 8 as “Disrespectful”

WARNING: This story contains spoilers for Game of Thrones Season 8.

Sophie Turner, also known as Sansa Stark, knew from the start that not everyone was going to like how Game of Thrones ends. “Honestly, I’m not surprised,” she told The New York Times in a new interview. “People always have an idea in their heads of how they want a show to finish, and so when it doesn’t go to their liking, they start to speak up about it and rebel.”

But demanding that the team redo the entire last season is too much. “All of these petitions and things like that — I think it’s disrespectful to the crew, and the writers, and the filmmakers who have worked tirelessly over 10 years, and for 11 months shooting the last season,” she told the paper. “Like 50-something night shoots. So many people worked so, so hard on it, and for people to just rubbish it because it’s not what they want to see is just disrespectful.”

A petition on Change.org called “Remake Game of Thrones Season 8 with competent writers” first surfaced about two weeks ago. The description reads: “David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have proven themselves to be woefully incompetent writers when they have no source material (i.e. the books) to fall back on. This series deserves a final season that makes sense. Subvert my expectations and make it happen, HBO!” It’s already amassed over 1.4 million signatures and counting.

Turner’s co-star Isaac Hempstead-Wright, who plays her little-brother-turned-king Bran Stark, also scoffed at the fan petition and defended the ending. “It’s just absurd,” he told The Hollywood Reporter. “I can’t even fathom it. It’s just ridiculous. (Laughs.) It’s ridiculous that people think they can just demand a different ending because they don’t like it.”

Nikolaj Coster-Waldau also seemed address the fan appeal, but with a sense of humor. While discussing the finale in an Instagram video, he said he’d like to see a sequel with Arya’s travels beyond Westeros, and says fans should petition for that successor show.

“How about, and I’m just throwing something out there, how about a petition? An online petition to HBO that they do a sequel to Arya Stark,” he says, ending with a goofy smile.

Emilia Clarke told The New Yorker that she hadn’t heard about the online plea, but if she did have to do anything differently this season, she would’ve loved more scenes with Missandei and Cersei.

Kit Harington didn’t address the petition specifically, but in an interview before Season 8 aired, he already had strong feelings for potential criticism. “I think no matter what anyone thinks about this season—and I don’t mean to sound mean about critics here—but whatever critic spends half an hour writing about this season and makes their [negative] judgement on it, in my head they can go fuck themselves,” he told Esquire. “‘Cause I know how much work was put into this.”

He also added, “Now if people feel let down by it, I don’t give a fuck—because everyone tried their hardest.”
