Sergey Tokarev, an investor of RefaceAI, announced that the Doublicat app crossed the mark of 5 million downloads in July. The app is developed by RefaceAI, an IT development company based in Ukraine, that allows its users to replace faces on GIF-images. A user of the app can replace his face with the face of a famous actor, athlete, or even the president of the US by using this app.
The functionality of the app is based on artificial intelligence as it uses a machine-learning algorithm to replace faces. In several countries, it has positioned itself among the tops of AppStore and GooglePlay charts.
Factors behind Doublicat’s success
Sergey Tokarev, a renowned IT businessman, noted the factors behind the success of the Doublicat app. He said that the app had gotten a huge success due to its unique technology, quality results, and shout-outs given by celebrities.
As far as the unique technology is concerned, the development team of RefaceAI introduced a new technology, Generative Adversarial Nets (GAN), in the field of face replacement. The competitors of the app including Morphine, Faces, and GIF You, use computer-generated imagery (CGI) technology. According to IT experts, GAN technology produces much better results as compared to CGI technology. It helped the app to become more popular as compared to other such apps.
Some celebrities shared the results of the app on social media. The RefaceAI investor mentioned the names of Jerry Heil and Olga Polyakova. Before the launch of Doublicat, the company released another app, Reflect, last year. The Reflect app replaced faces on photos. Elon Musk, the founder of SpaceX, shared the results of the app on his Twitter account. “Musk’s post created a chain reaction in the media around the world, and that, in its turn, helped to popularize Doublicat,” noted Sergey Tokarev.
Success Story of Doublicat
The app was released by the company on January 13, 2020. More than 750000 users downloaded the app in the first two months of its release. One month later, the app surpassed 1 million downloads. In less than the next two months, the app grew intensively and reached the mark of 4 million downloads. Eventually, in July, the app crossed the major milestone of 5 million downloads.
In Ukraine, it left TikTok and Privatbank behind in terms of the number of downloads. On July 28, the app was ranked 17th on AppStore in the entertainment category in the US. Moreover, the ranking of the app was 13th on GooglePlay in the US. Along with Ukraine, the app became highly popular in the Philippines and Thailand. The users from Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Malaysia also liked the app very much.
Sergey Tokarev said, “The way of the company to the face replacement on GIF-images has been long, difficult and involved several stages.” The company took more than 3 years to develop the GAN technology. The hard work of the company paid its price in the form of the Doublicat app. The IT businessman explained the hard work and devotion of the development team in terms of creating an app based on completely new technology.
Future goals of RefaceAI
Some people have been using the app for wrong purposes. They are trying to defame some people by replacing their faces on some inappropriate photos and GIF-images. The next aim of RefaceAI is to develop software that will detect such fake videos and images. Moreover, the company is planning to master a new technology of replacing faces on videos.
