Coronation Street fans devastated as Leanne and Steve's son Oliver dies
Coronation Street fans were left broken after an emotional episode, which saw Leanne Battersby (Jane Danson) and Steve McDonald (Simon Gregson)’s son Oliver die, following a long illness.
The youngster had been battling Mitochondrial disease in a harrowing storyline, with his parents desperately trying to save his life through whatever means necessary.
Oliver has been on a life support machine as they struggled to come to terms with his condition.
Earlier this week, Leanne realised that he would continue to suffer if he survived, and eventually dropped her appeal to keep him alive.
A nurse explained that they would remove his breathing tube, so he would drift off into a deep sleep, and insisted he would not be in any pain.
In heartbreaking scenes, she joined Steve at Oliver’s bedside, preparing to say goodbye for the last time.
They could be seen serenading him with a tear-filled rendition of You Are My Sunshine, while Nick Tilsey (Ben Price) and Tracy (Kate Ford) waited outside.
As the singing stopped, it hit the pair that Oliver had died.
Viewers watching on from home were in tears over the moment, flocking to Twitter to share their feelings.
A follower commented: ‘Well I’m drowning in my own tears here #corrie.’
One agreed: ‘Crying my eyes out #Corrie.’
‘My heart breaks for any families who have had to go through this. Just devastating #Corrie ,’ a Twitter user said.
Many, many more heaped praise on Jane and Simon for their incredible portrayal of the parents.
‘Jane Dawson ladies and gentlemen! #Corrie,’ a fan replied.
Another enthused: ‘Sorry… but @RealJaneDanson has earnt every bloody penny on this storyline. #Corrie.’
As a viewer added: ‘#Corrie Jane and Simon are amazing aren’t they?’
There are more emotional times to come for the family, as they gather for Oliver’s funeral.
