Viewers hit out at BBC bosses for hiring US football star Hope Solo for World Cup coverage despite arrest for alleged violence
- US goalkeeper has twice been suspended by the US team for angry outbursts
- She was also arrested for allegedly attacking her half-sister and a nephew, but the charges were later dropped
- BBC have hired her as a pundit for the women’s World Cup which kicked off on Friday
The England women’s football team began their World Cup campaign in style yesterday, beating Scotland 2-1 in Nice.
Nikita Parris scored an early penalty before Manchester City’s Ellen White doubled the score just before halftime.
The Group D victory came as viewers criticised the BBC’s decision to employ a controversial American goalkeeper as a pundit for the tournament.
Hope Solo has been hired as a BBC pundit for the women’s World Cup
Hope Solo has twice been suspended by the US team for angry outbursts, and was also arrested for allegedly attacking her half-sister and 17-year-old nephew, although the charges were later dropped.
The following year she and her husband Jerramy Stevens, a former American footballer, were stopped by police and he was arrested for drink driving.
Solo was allegedly almost also arrested when she became ‘belligerent’. Solo, 37, was part of the BBC’s pitch-side team for its coverage of the Lionesses’ win over Scotland.
One fan said on Twitter: ‘Whoever thought hiring Hope Solo was a good idea needs to be sacked. If a male player had been charged with domestic violence are we really saying the BBC would be happy to sign him up? Shameful.’
A BBC spokesman said last night: ‘We are very pleased with the expert analysis that Hope has brought to our World Cup coverage this weekend.’
