Olympic champion Adam Peaty’s proud parents Caroline and Mark and partner Eiri have shared their delight at his gold medal victory on Good Morning Britain.
Peaty earned Team GB’s first gold medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics for the 100m breaststroke, kicking off what was dubbed ‘Magic Monday’ with four medals since being won.
Parents Caroline and Mark made a last-minute appearance on GMB this morning to talk to Susanna Reid and Ben Shepherd about his achievement, saying they were ‘super proud’ of the 26-year-old.
“It’s a bit unreal at the moment,” said Caroline, admitting it hadn’t quite sunk in yet and that she had only been able to speak to him via a voice message.
“I also just told him that I could feel the pressure that was on him last night. Our last night… early hours. Last time I couldn't.
“Every time somebody said "it's going to be a gold, it's going to be a gold" to get people you can't take it for granted. Anything can happen.”
Eiri Munro, Adam’s partner and mother to his 10-month-old son George, also appeared on the show and revealed the family had been up at 3am to watch him compete.
“We had some friends stay over, my mum was here and George was up as well,” she said. “He would've woken up anyway with all the commotion.”
“There have been a lot of sacrifices that we've had to make,” she added. “But seeing him win, just seeing him at the Olympics, let alone winning the gold, has made it all worth it.”
“We had a FaceTime, it lasted about five minutes and we didn't really say much, because I think we're both just a little bit in shock, I guess still,” Eiri continued. “We were just kind of smiling.
“I guess maybe pretending that we were together, because we're a long way away from each other.”
The family’s appearance came after Ed Baxter, Adam’s former training partner, gave an insight into the gold medallist’s win, and the amount of effort it took for him to be Olympic level during the pressures of the pandemic.
“It’s so incredible. I think I’m in a very unique perspective,” Ed said. “I work with him in the pool so I see that competition. I also see him at home with his son, and I’m the friend he turns to when he’s worried about something and needs to talk.
“From all angles where I’ve seen him, he’s had a hard time over the last few years – he’s had things he’s really struggled with and I’m so, so proud of him for last night.”
Speaking after the monumental win, Peaty said: “It just means the world to me. I thought I had the best preparation but morning finals changed everything and threw that out of window.
"I felt the pressure but I needed to put myself on edge. You can do whatever you want in your own pool but when it comes to being out here it's not about a time.
"I was racing myself. It wasn't about the time but the race.
"Thanks to the nation for being behind me for five years and my family and my beautiful boy."
Good Morning Britain airs weekdays from 6am on ITV.
