EastEnders best and most wild storylines from poisoned pie to Christmas divorces

WithEastEnders spending nearly 40 years on our screens, viewers have seen plenty of dramatic moments unfold on Albert Square. From murder twists to shock divorces, the BBC One show has had it all.

In fact, viewers have seen a 2023 flash forward scene in which six of Walford’s much loved matriarchs, Denise (Diane Parish), Kathy (Gillian Taylforth), Linda (Kellie), Sharon (Letitia Dean), Stacey (Lacey Turner) and Suki (Balvinder Sopal) are left dealing with a dead body. While it’s unclear what’s happened or whose body it is,viewers have been left questioning everything following the surprise twist.

So, with that in mind, let’s take a peek at some more wild storylines from episodes gone by…

Dot Cotton’s cannabis tea

Throughout her time on Albert Square, Dot Cotton was one of the most infamous characters on the soap. But perhaps one of her more iconic moments came when she treated a policeman to some herbal tea.

However, it turned out that the tea wasn’t actually herbal and was in fact cannabis, causing Dot to get arrested by the copper.

Max Branning’s burial

It’s safe to say that EastEnders has seen its fair share of affairs throughout the years, though some reactions have been more extreme than others.

For instance, when Tanya Cross discovered that Max Branning had been having an affair in 2008, she decided to bury him alive after drugging him and putting him in a coffin unconscious.

Den Watts’ return from the dead

When a character leaves the soap, storylines sometimes leave the potential for a return open, while others are less mysterious.

When Den Watts was assassinated by a man holding a gun in a bouquet of flowers, viewers assumed that it was over for Dirty Den when they figured that he was dead.

However, that wasn’t the case and 14 years later the character appeared to overcome his death when he returned to Albert Square to greet his daughter Sharon Mitchell.

Heather Trott’s George Michael obsession

Less wild and more bizarre, George Michael superfan Heather Trott took her love for the popstar to the next level when she snuck into what she believed to be his garden.

After being joined by a reluctant Shirley, Heather searched through the singer’s bin for a souvenir. Coming across a yoghurt pot, Heather got the piece of rubbish laminated and wore it around her neck for luck.

Years later, Heather named her son George Michael.

Barry Evans’ death

Was it a cliff or was it a large hill? It’s a discussion that still has EastEnders fans divided.

But in 2004, Janine Butcher proved herself to be quite the soap villain when she pushed her husband Barry Evans to his death during a trip to Scotland.

More recently, viewers saw Janine get arrested in December for perverting the course of justice, shortly after Mick Carter went missing.

Nick Cotton’s poisoned shepherd’s pie

In a bid to kill his mother Dot and get his hands on her money, Nick Cotton poisoned her shepherd’s pie.

However, he couldn’t go through with the plan and years later tried to get his niece and non-biological daughter Dotty to spike her tea instead. Unsurprisingly, Dotty couldn’t go through with the plan.

Dirty Den’s divorce papers

An EastEnders Christmas is never merry and bright, as Angie Watts found when her husband Dirty Den served her up with some divorce papers.

As one of the UK’s most watched TV episodes at the time, thousands tuned in to see Den hand his wife the papers, which is signed off ‘Happy Christmas, Ange!’.

Sonia Jackson’s surprise baby

At 15 years old, Sonia Jackson was given a shock when she went into labour without even knowing that she was pregnant.

After giving birth to the little tot on Dot’s sofa, Sonia named her daughter Chloe though she was adopted after Sonia thought she was too young to be a parent. However, Sonia felt guilty for her actions and later kidnapped Chloe (who had been renamed Rebecca) from her adoptive parents.
