Gavin and Stacey fans were delighted when writers James Corden and Ruth Jones announced a Christmas special episode last year, which left viewers wanting more. Now, Alison Steadman, 73, has shared whether she believes a follow-up could happen.

Back in December, fans were left calling for more episodes after the Christmas special ended with Nessa (played by Ruth Jones) proposing to her ex Smithy (James Corden) in a shocking moment.

Viewers swiftly flocked to social media to share their frustrations at the cliffhanger, as Smithy’s answer had not been revealed.

“That’s the tease,” Alison replied when quizzed about the cliffhanger. “Let’s just wait and see what happens.”

The actress went on to say there are no plans for the cast to reunite and film again, but said if was to happen, it’s likely to take as long as two years.

“There’s no talk of it.

“I don’t think it would be for another two years. James is in America, Ruth is here. They are extremely busy people.

“Finding the time to get together and put another show together is very difficult.

“These things take months and months. You develop it, you change it, and then you have another idea and so on.

“It’s quite a long process. And then you’ve got to get the actors free. It’s not an easy thing to do.

“I couldn’t imagine it happening, but listen, I’m saying this, I could get a script tomorrow.

“I would love it, you know, get the fluffy jumpers back on and have a bit of fun.”

Alison went on to say there was no talk of filming more episodes when the cast were together for the Christmas special last year.

She added: “Everyone was thrilled to bits, it was amazing to get everyone free.

“We all had a hug and then we met up for the press screening and then at the National Television Awards and then said goodbye, that was it.”

Larry Lamb, who plays Pam’s on-screen husband Mick Shipman, believes another episode will happen at some point.

Addressing the cliffhanger in the Christmas episode, he told OK! Magazine: “I think it would be pretty cruel to leave us on that cliffhanger.

“After the response it got at Christmas, you can more or less be certain that, sooner or later, there will be more.”

Larry added: “I’m sure the BBC can persuade Ruth and James to write more, so it’s a question of when, not if.”

But ruling out a new series, he added: “It’s virtually impossible for there to be a whole series, but I imagine there will be another special.”

Co-creator Ruth also told Radio Times: “It was difficult to get together to write it and to find time when everybody was available for the filming period, so there are a lot of hurdles to overcome.

“And also, there’s something nice about leaving it hanging in the air and wondering ‘did they ever get married, or didn’t they?’ So, we’ll see.”
