Hollywood star Brad Pitt, 58, has explained how taking up sculpting helped him to channel his “pain” following his divorce from ex-wife Angelina Jolie, 47. The Bullet Train actor recently debuted his first ever collection of sculpture at an art gallery in Finland, marking a move away from focusing solely on his acting career.
Brad has recalled bonding with artist Thomas Houseago back in 2016 over their “mutual misery”, several months after officially splitting from Eternals actress Angelina.
The pair were both dealing with difficult personal issues at the time, but Brad explained how their “mutual misery” had ultimately transformed into a “flame of joy”.
Brad met Thomas at a New Year’s Eve party in 2016 and, while the Fight Club star was dealing with the breakdown of his marriage, the pair had also both faced problems with alcohol in the past.
“Our mutual misery became comic,” Brad reflected. “And out of this misery came a flame of joy in my life. I always wanted to be a sculptor; I’d always wanted to try it.”
“We were thrown together in trauma and catastrophe,” Thomas added in the Financial Times interview.
After meeting Thomas, Brad found himself hanging out at the artist’s studio, where he was able to unleash his passion for sculpture.
The star has since teamed up with Australian musician Nick Cave for a joint exhibition, WE, which made its debut last month at the Sara Hilden Art Museum in Finland.
Speaking to Finland’s public broadcaster YLE, Brad described how his failed relationships had helped influence his art.
He told them: “It’s about, you know, where have I gotten it wrong in my relationships? Where have I misstepped? Where am I complicit?”
“It was born out of ownership of really what I call a radical inventory of self, getting really, brutally honest with me and…
“Taking account of those I may have hurt and moments I’ve just gotten wrong.”
At the exhibition, sixteen of Brad’s sculptures were on display, with one depicting a gunfight.

The Inglorious Basterds star also created a series of model houses, each shot through with different gauges of ammunition.
His first ever sculpture, from 2017, “House A Go Go”: an 18-inch miniature house made out of tree bark, crudely held together with tape, is also featured.
The Sara Hildén Art Museum said of Brad and Nick’s work: “Cave and Pitt are already renowned in their respective fields of music and cinema.
“But this is the first time ever they have exhibited their artwork — pieces which were created during the course of an ongoing dialogue with Houseago.”
Brad and Angelina were together for 10 years, finally marrying in 2014 only to divorce two years later in 2016.
The former couple share six children together, Maddox, 20, Pax, 18, Zahara, 17, Shiloh, 16 and twins Knox and Vivienne, 14.
Prior to their relationship, Brad was married to Friends actress Jennifer Aniston from 1999 to 2005.
Meanwhile, Angelina was married to Billy Bob Thornton between 2000 and 2003 and to Johnny Lee Miller before that from 1996 to 1999.
