Carol Kirkwood, 58, first joined BBC News in 1998 and has since become well known for presenting the weather for BBC each morning. But while Carol is a staple on our screens what is known of the presenter’s off-screen life?

Carol has been a stalwart of BBC Breakfast with her celebrating 20 years on the show back in 2018.

Although Carol has previously said, she wanted to present on the long-running children’s BBC show, Blue Peter.

Talking to the Radio Times, Carol said: “I always wanted to be a Blue Peter presenter but never had the guts. I was far too shy.”

Carol Kirkwood was born Carol MacKellaig in Morar, Inverness-shire.

She is reported to have a big family with Carol being one of eight children.

However, while she is from a big family, Carol does not have any children of her own.

Carol has been given the title Auntie by her former BBC Breakfast college Steph McGovern.

Back in February, Steph tweeted: “My new favourite thing is watching Auntie Carol @carolkirkwood doing a personal weather forecast for my 3 month old daughter whilst sitting on her knee (the baby not me). #weatherwords #babychat.”

Carol was previously married to ex-husband Jimmy Kirkwood.

They married in 1990, however, after nearly two decades the couple chose to go their separate ways in 2008.

Carol later spoke of her divorce with Jimmy to Radio Times.

Carol told the publication: “I found myself when I got divorced. I started to do things and to think, ‘I’m not going to say no, I’m going to say yes!

“I’m braver now. I’ve flown with the Red Arrows, jumped out of planes with the Red Devils.

“When I was younger I would never have done that because I’d have thought, ‘Too dangerous!’ Now I think, ‘Oh, you’ve got to live your life!'”

In May, Carol said that she had been involved in a bike accident.

On BBC Breakfast, on May 19 Carol said: “I was out on my bike and got knocked off it by a car that drove into me, it was pure accident of course, and I got injured.

“This is a great opportunity to say thank you to the three cyclists that helped me immediately after the incident.

“And also the Thames Valley police, that was Chris and also Faye.

“And the ambulance that tended to me and took me to hospital, that was Miranda and Stewart.”
