Chris Evans: Virgin Radio host mistakes Tim Minchin’s review for rude word in huge blunder

Chris Evans, 53, featured Aussie musician and producer, Tim Minchin, 44 on his show on Friday ahead of the release of his new Sky Original series, Upright. And, while they were deep in conversation, he ended up mistaking something Tim said for a rude word.

I must apologise for that, I’m sorry. Otherwise we’ll get fined

Throughout the show, artist Tom Walker, was also in the studio performing a live session following the release of his latest single Better Half of Me and deluxe version of his debut album What a Time to Be Alive.

He sang his hit, Leave a Light On, which left the studio in awe.

Once finished, everyone erupted with applause and Chris was keen to find out Tim’s thoughts, given his musical experience.

“Tim, you’re more qualified than any of us,” he began.

“How do you feel when you hear [Tom] sing that song?”

Tim gave quite the “glowing” appraisal, which ended in total confusion.

“I don’t understand his voice, I love his voice,” Tim said.

“And, I love his singing and I love his phrasing. I think he’s extraordinarily authentic and quite cute and he’s got a good pianist,” he explained, as listeners heard muffled giggling from the studio.

“It’s a glowing review, I’ll take it thank you very much!” Tom said.

“He’s got a good sized pianist,” Tim continued trying to stifle his laughter at the raunchy joke.

The innuendo left the studio in fits of giggles, but Chris suddenly interrupted: “I’ve got to apologise for that.”

The studio went quiet as he continued: “I must apologise for that, I’m sorry. Otherwise we’ll get fined.”

There was a slight pause as the studio, guests and listeners wondered what Chris was apologising for.

Tim was especially confused, as he asked, bewildered: “Pianist?”

Suddenly there was a snort of laughter: “I thought you said p****!” Chris spluttered.

As listeners could hear Chris howling at his mistake, Tim was shocked that the host thought he would say something so inappropriate on-air.

“Chris Evans, tidy yourself up!” He exclaimed.

“Just because you had a big lunch yesterday doesn’t mean you have to get all guttural.”

After the radio DJ apologised for his mistake and again because it was actually him that ended up saying the rude word that could result in the radio station being fined, he swiftly moved on with the show.

Although Tim didn’t commit the ultimate broadcast sin and curse live on-air, Chris has had to apologise for celebrity guest blunders in the past.

Last month, the radio host was forced to jump in and stop the conversation during an interview with Welsh rock band, Stereophonics after lead singer, Kelly Jones, dropped a rude word into the mix.

“We just gave you a brilliant introduction there, that you ruined,” Chris joked as the band laughed.

Kelly had been talking about how he’d flooded his dad’s car when he was younger when he accidentally said a word deemed not appropriate for broadcast.

The Chris Evans Breakfast Show on Virgin Radio with Sky airs weekdays at 6:30am.
