Doctor Who recap: It’s… The Master! Series 12 kicks off with an EPIC cliffhanger as the Time Lord’s nemesis returns in guest star-laden opener

Doctor Who Series 12 kicked off with a heart-stopping twist on New Years Day, as The Master made an epic return in an episode laden with guest stars.

The episode saw the TARDIS team try and track down aliens who were targeting MI6 agents, but it seemed they were coming from a threat far closer to The Doctor’s home.

Jodie Whittaker has also reprised her role as the titular Time Lord after being lauded by fans for her debut performance in 2018.

Doctor Who recap: It’s… The Master! Series 12 kicks off with an EPIC cliffhanger as the Time Lord’s nemesis returned in guest star-laden opener, which aired on Wednesday

The first of a two-part episode began with a typical Who mystery, as a woman took snaps of a coded message before electricity gave her a nasty shock.

While it’s not clear how long Yaz, Ryan and Graham have been travelling with the Time Lord, their ruse of plans to go ‘travelling’ seemed to have caused some suspicion.

As the trio prepare to go and join The Doctor, they’re kidnapped by the mysterious Men In Black, sparking the episode’s best line as Graham brands it the ‘worst Uber ever.’

The journey takes a dramatic turn as the agent is blasted by a laser from within the car’s sat nav, and the vehicle speeds out of control until it is perilously close to a ledge.

Given it’s only the first episode, The Doctor manages to stop the car and save her ‘fam’ (the name has stuck), and it’s revealed that the Men In Black were sent by MI6 and their head man C, played by Stephen Fry.

The episode’s key mystery is then revealed, as the woman from the airplane was found unconscious, and it seems that she was targeted by an otherworldly threat as her entire human DNA has been wiped to leave her an empty shell.

C tasks the Doctor with finding out why spies are being targeted, and she decides to track down a rogue spy known as The Horizon Watcher, who was the only member of MI6 who supported the presence of aliens, following the surprising demise of UNIT.

It even seems The Doctor has gotten with the times, as she quickly gets in touch with the agent on Whatsapp!

C also tells the team of the billionaire tech mogul and former agent Daniel Barton, played by Lenny Henry, who created the search engine VOR, who is described as being more powerful than most countries.

Before they have time to form a plan, C is killed by a laser, and The Doctor and the TARDIS team have to make a speedy escape before being caught by the aliens which seem to be morphed out of light (and are eerily similar to Series Two’s ‘ghosts’).

The Doctor and Graham decide to go and track down the agent, while Yaz and Ryan go undercover as journalists to interview Barton at his headquarters in San Francisco.

Mission: C tasks the Doctor with finding out why spies are being targeted, and she decides to track down a rogue spy known as The Horizon Watcher

The brief interview is an intriguing one, as Barton touches on failing to trust anyone, and his loyalty is revealed to be even more questionable as Yaz’s spy scanner reveals he is only 93% human!

Meanwhile The Doctor and Graham track down The Horizon Watcher (or O) to a remote shack in Australia, which is heavily guarded by MI6 agents.

But the bizarre light creatures have followed The Doctor, and O manages to trap one in a chamber after they wipe out the Aussie agents.

The tense confrontation reveals they’re on a mission to rule over the entire universe, and it seems they’re working for Barton, who is caught by Ryan and Yaz confronting them and demanding an update on their plans.

Adversary: C also tells the team of the billionaire tech mogul and former agent Daniel Barton, played by Lenny Henry, who is described as being more powerful than most countries

The episode features a surprisingly emotional moment, as Yaz is captured by the aliens and transported to another dimension, before ending up in the mystery chamber.

It brings on one of the shows few emotional moments as Yaz reflects on her brush with death, before the episode roars back into gear as they don their best bow ties (so very spy) to confront Barton at his birthday party.

Of course Barton denies all involvement, but The Doctor vows to stop his plans… whatever they are!

Seeking him out: The Doctor and Graham track down The Horizon Watcher (or O) to a remote shack in Australia, which is heavily guarded by MI6 agents

As he attempts to flee the bash, Daniel is chased by The TARDIS team on their motorbikes, and chase him onto the plane ready to learn about his destination.

But in a dramatic twist, O reveals he’s far from just the rogue agent. He’s the Master! The long-time and thought-dead nemesis of the Doctor.

He reveals that he took the form of O years earlier when he first started working for MI6,

Drama: During the episode, Daniel attempts to flee the TARDIS team after Yaz is captured by aliens, and they chase him onto the plane ready to learn about his destination

It seems this reincarnation is a far more unpredictable, as he maniacally reveals the plane has been rigged with a bomb, and he’s the one involved with the light aliens.

Barton’s whereabouts remains unknown, and as the episode comes to a shocking cliffhanger, the bomb sends the plane crashing back to Earth, but the Doctor has been transported to the dimension, where Yaz was briefly taken after being captured by the creatures.

Doctor Who Series 12 continues on Sunday at 7pm on BBC One.

Surprise: While on the plane, and in a dramatic twist, O reveals he’s far from just the rogue agent. He’s the Master! The long-time and thought-dead nemesis of the Doctor
