Hans Meyer dead: South African actor who starred in TV series Colditz dies aged 94

Hans Meyer has died aged 94 in Neuilly sur Seine, France on April 3.

A representative for the actor has confirmed his death was not related to the coronavirus.

Hans was best known for starring in the 1972 BBC TV show Colditz as Hauptmann Franz Ulmann.

The series focused on Allied prisoners of war imprisoned at Colditz Castle during World War II, and their many attempts to escape captivity.

The actor was also known for his role in Hollywood film Red Sonja.

He starred in an episode of 1992 series The Case-Book of Sherlock Holmes, and had a small part in 1992 show The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles, which co-starred Sean Patrick Flanery.

Hans, who was born in South Africa in 1925, began his career as a model and posed for book covers.

He then moved into TV when a friend in Germany recommended him for a vodka advert.

Hans went on to get his big break with a small part in 1967 war movie The Night of the Generals alongside Peter O’Toole and Omar Sharif.

He then landed roles in several French films throughout the 1960s, including director Yves Boisset’s The Devil’s Garden.
