Jada Pinkett Smith Didn’t Want to Marry Will Smith at First
Are Jada Pinkett Smith and Will Smith couple goals? YES, duh. Did they always know marriage and wedding dresses and the whole shebang was for them? Well, honestly, no.
They dated for a couple years before learning Jada was pregnant with their son, Jaden Smith, but a wedding wasn’t exactly on Jada’s to-do list right away, and she’s open about that.
“I never wanted to get married,” she said in a new People cover story. “But my mother was like, ‘You have to get married’—she’s so old-school—and Will wanted a family. So I said, ‘All right, maybe it’s something I should do.”
And before you get all judgy, please know that it had absolutely zero to do with how Jada felt about Will. She said she’s madly in love, and was at the time, but she just didn’t think marriage was for her.
“I had never seen a happy marriage,” she said. “I adored Will, I fu*king adored him, but I just didn’t want to be married.”
#Aladdin Premiere was last night. The Movie is SPECTACULAR!! Can’t wait for y’all to see it.

Totally, totally reasonable. Still, she ended up changing her mind and going through with the ceremony after her Gammy intervened. Jada said she had really bad morning sickness when she and Will eventually said “I do” on New Year’s Eve in 1997, but Jada and Will don’t, like, LOVE the married label. Even today.
“It’s more of a life partnership,” she said. “I don’t own him. He doesn’t own me. He has to be his own person first, and vice versa….Love is freedom.”
Whatever they want to call it, clearly, it works well for them.
