Kate Garraway’s husband Derek ‘opens eyes’ as he wakes up from COVID-19 coma

Good Morning Britain star Kate Garraway’s husband Derek Draper, 52, has “opened his eyes” in hospital after being in a coma. The ITV star’s spouse was placed in intensive care with coronavirus on March 30.

It comes after Kate exclusively told Hello magazine: “We’re keeping positive and doing everything we can to bring him round.
“The children and I communicate with him every day on FaceTime, while a nurse holds his iPad.”
She continued: “I really believe he can hear. When medical staff say ‘Good morning, Derek,’ he sometimes opens his eyes.
“We and the doctors are doing everything we can so that he can start to recover.”

Kate, who was told six times she may lose her other half, added: “The doctors have been urging me not to put my life on pause.
“They’ve told me that I need to go back to work and create a routine in our lives again.”
Later on, she added: “I have been living at the end of the phone 24/7, waiting for news of Derek.
“But the doctors have warned that his condition could persist for years so I have to get on with life whilst we are waiting for him to get better.
“Billy starts secondary school in September, but Derek’s doctors say he won’t be out of hospital by then.
“My priority is to make the children feel safe, not to let them see me feeling vulnerable in the world where Derek was my rock.”
It comes after her I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here co-star Myles Stephenson revealed he has been a “big brother” to Kate and Derek’s two children, Darcey and Billy while her spouse continues his battle in hospital.

“I have such a close relationship with them all – including Derek.
“Kate knows I am there for her at the drop of a dime – for her and the kids – anything she needs.”
He added: “She has taken me up on the offer a few times, but I don’t really want to say what she’s asked for.
“It’s just about looking out for the kids and being a big brother to them.”

The Rak-Su star went on to share: “It’s been very hard.
“All we can do is pray for Derek and pray for Kate and the kids as well.”
Derek is free from coronavirus, but the virus attacked other parts of his body, leaving him to remain in critical care.
Kate married the former political adviser back in 2005.
