Katherine Ryan says house plant sparked biggest online backlash

Katherine Ryan, 39, was recently left leaping to her own defence on Instagram after social media users criticised her for drinking wine while breastfeeding.

In a conversation with Express.co.uk about the matter, the comedian revealed that there is something else at home that causes her to recieve a negative reaction: her house plants.

She said: “I just feel like if you’re gonna post something on social media you have to expect a backlash, whether it’s drinking while breastfeeding or something else.

“The most comments that I get are, people don’t think I’m watering one of my plants properly in my front room.

“I get horticulturalists who are like, ‘What are you doing to that banana leaf plant?’

“I’m like, ‘Listen, it’s all right with me’, I embrace it all.”

Katherine is used to getting criticism online after she was blasted for holding a glass of wine near her baby, Fenna Grace, just last month.

When Express.co.uk asked the television star if she sometimes finds the heat too much, Katherine instead admitted that it doesn’t upset her but forces her to challenge norms.

She explained: “I don’t struggle at all. I struggle less probably than anyone that I know. Because, I mean, I’ve been fine with criticism since middle school.

“I’m going to be 40 this year and I know that when it comes to mum shaming in particular, people are really passionate about parenting and children.

“They’re gonna have an opinion on it, but I think I’m the perfect person to start a discussion about any contentious subject – that really doesn’t hurt my feelings.

“And then we get to say, ‘Oh, actually the science says you can have a glass of wine’ and then maybe it might encourage someone to feel less shy about breastfeeding in public or maybe like that they can enjoy a glass of wine with their partner or their girlfriends and feel more balanced as a new mom.

Katherine then touched on the worrying side of social media for “young developing minds”.

She continued: “I think being 40 this year I’m very lucky. I think this is why social media is quite a good tool in many ways, but it’s also a dangerous tool for young developing minds.

“If you’re a teenage young woman and you don’t yet know how to deal with criticism or how seriously to take it, it can be quite difficult.

“It’s probably hurtful and damaging, but I’m very lucky that I grew up without it.”
