Margot Robbie has come a long way since leaving her role as Donna Freedman on Australian soap Neighbours nine years ago. The actress is now based in Los Angeles after setting up home there with her husband, British director and producer Tom Ackerley, 30.

The pair met on the set of Suite Française in 2013 and became housemates in London. They married three years later in Australia.

Here, new chat to Margot about sex scenes with Leonardo DiCaprio, the biggest lessons she’s learned from her 20s, and her plans to invite LA newbies the Duke and Duchess of Sussex over for dinner…

Hi Margot! You are internationally famous. What’s the hardest part about living your life under a microscope?

Doing the normal things, I guess. When I first moved to London, I could do a huge pub crawl and nobody would bother me. The reality is that would be a lot harder now. I’m incredibly fortunate to do what I love though, so I can’t complain.

You’re currently living in LA. How does life out there compare to London?

London was and is a city that is incredibly special to me. I absolutely loved living there, but it was getting to the point where I was constantly living out of hotels in LA, and from a work perspective it made sense to make it home. I do miss London and when it’s safe to travel again, I will visit. I adored Christmases there.

Prince Harry has recently moved to LA with his wife Meghan. What advice would you give them to help them settle in?

Give it time, I think. I have moved country twice now and it’s not easy, but in time, places become home and LA has a lot to offer.

You said you’d invite Harry and Meghan over for dinner. Has that happened?

We haven’t [had dinner] but I would, for sure. Whenever I met Harry in London at parties, he was always a lot of fun, so it would be great to have them both over.

Did you and Meghan ever cross paths on the showbiz scene?

No, not really. But obviously I know Harry and I kind of feel like we can relate to them and their move, so it would be cool to hang out and have dinner.

You’ve been married for nearly four years. What’s the secret to a happy marriage?

When I first met Tom, we were best friends and roommates in London, and we are still best friends. So I guess that’s our secret – marry your best friend!

You recently turned 30. What has been the biggest lesson of your 20s?

This is for women in general, but to learn to believe in yourself. The film industry has been gravitating towards more female leads and it’s important we know we can achieve our dreams, whatever we do.

Do you ever pinch yourself at how your life has turned out?

It was always my dream to do a Quentin Tarantino movie, and now I have [she starred in Once Upon A Time In Hollywood] – that’s still a pinch me moment. Of course, I want to continue getting complex and challenging roles, but I would also like to do some more producing, and even directing as well.

Have you ever had any embarrassing moments on the red carpet?

My dress came undone at the premiere of The Legend Of Tarzan. Thankfully I was rescued just in time!

And finally, we have to ask, what was it like doing sex scenes with Leonardo DiCaprio in The Wolf Of Wall Street?

I think, because audiences see the finished product, there is this misconception that kissing scenes or whatever are glamorous. But the reality is you have been shooting for 18 hours and you have a whole crew watching you. Working with Leo is great, though. He has taken me under his wing from day one and has become a great friend.
