Reverend Richard Coles, 57, is about to embark on a new venture in his career as he teams up with acclaimed comedian David Baddiel, among others, for a new Channel 4 show Stand Up and Deliver, as part of Stand Up to Cancer 2021. While the priest learns the ins and outs of comedy all in the name of charity, he touched on the death of his civil partner Reverend David Coles, revealing his final moments were “full of comedy”.

David’s death was actually full of comedy, which made me and him laugh when he was in a fit state to appreciate what was going on

David died in 2019 following a lengthy illness with Richard announcing his death on Twitter, thanking the “brilliant teams” who looked after him at Kettering General Hospital.

The couple lived together with their dogs in their vicarage in Northamptonshire, where Richard is still a vicar.

In a recent interview, the priest smiled as he looked back on the last happy moments they shared together.

“David’s death was actually full of comedy, which made me and him laugh when he was in a fit state to appreciate what was going on,” he said.

“Medics, undertakers and clergy have a black sense of humour, but I’m not sure it’s something for public consumption!”

Richard admitted David was very private when it came to his health and didn’t want to make it public knowledge that he was dying.

He continued to tell Radio Times: “When David was dying, he didn’t want anybody to know and yet his physical deterioration was obvious.

“So we’re always on patrol, aren’t we? Of what we are prepared to release to the public.

“Comedians probably push that boundary harder than all of us.”

Richard has been surrounded by death a lot over the past year, officiating a number of funerals during the coronavirus pandemic.

But while it appears to be a morbid job, he notes dark humour gets him through.

“As a vicar, of course I spend a lot of my time laughing in the face of death,” he explained.

“It comes with the territory, and dark humour is good and cool.

“Also my sister-in- law died of cancer and Covid, in the middle of all this, so being involved with Stand Up to Cancer is obviously a good thing.”
