Ambush RTW and Men’s Fall 2021

As she branches out from her roots in jewelry and matures as a clothing designer, so do Yoon Ahn’s collections. While her offering for fall has an overall streetwear feel with nods to her hip-hop connections, it is also more sophisticated than her previous Ambush collections.

This season, Ahn focused on the idea of comfort, but not only in terms of wearability. She said she is also becoming more comfortable with herself as a designer, and that as she enters a new chapter for her brand she wants to create a wardrobe that her customers can feel comfortable about. “I don’t ever want the clothes to wear them,” she said.

The designer said her last season was something of a “palate cleanser” as she decides what kinds of fabrics, cuts and styles are representative of Ambush. For fall, she started to build on that base, while still aiming to create pieces with a timelessness that allows them to be worn with items from past or future collections. “If the design is good, it transcends time,” she said.

Presenting her collection in look book form, Ahn turned out relaxed versions of suits, classic coats, rib knits and puffer vests. Silhouettes were often oversize, but still maintained their shape. She paired a long, slinky knit skirt with a cozy-looking ivory blouson, while a softly tailored magenta pantsuit had a relaxed yet refined shape, its crossover jacket secured with a long belt in the same fabric.

Outerwear was also prominent, especially among the men’s offering. Lambskin trenchcoats, a green shearling bomber and outdoorsy jackets designed to protect against the elements all found a place in the collection. A palette of mostly neutrals was offset by splashes of bright pink, yellow and green.

While she said that everything in the collection is “essential in its own way,” Ahn called the dresses some of her favorites of the season. A slipdress with chain-link straps and another black number with a silver cuff between midriff cutouts hinted at her background as a jewelry designer, while also not feeling overly dressed up. “I don’t know when we’ll have occasions again, so these are things that can be worn anytime,” she said.
