‘Cheap’ Christmas trees covered in tinsel look ‘common and tacky’ expert claims – and if yours is white it’s even worse

THE best part of Christmas is by far decorating the tree, with baubles, tinsel and ornaments being decorations of choice.

But as it turns out, tinsel is a decorating no-no, according to the experts, who say' the age-old festive favourite looks "common and tacky".

What's more, if you are going with a fake tree to get you through a couple of years, avoid fashionable colour trends such as pink, white or multicoloured and stick to traditional green instead.

Why you ask? Well, Georgina Burnett, ITV This Morning's interiors and DIY expert and founder of www.TheHomeGenie.com, told Femail that coloured trees have a "short shelf life" and they make it look like you're "trying too hard to keep up with fashion."

Fake trees have the potential too look super cheap and tacky also, so you're better off picking up a real one instead.

Butif you are going the fake route in order to save some cash, then invest in a better quality one – and ALWAYS fluff out the branches.

As for tinsel, well, it's very "1985", according to Steph Briggs, founder of interior and gifts emporium, La Di Da Interiors.

So while you may have been rocking the latest interior trends in the 80s, it's certainly not the case now some 40 years later.

Georgina agrees adding that it's "best left in the eighties", and instead you should use "natural themed garlands or subtle ones representing your colour scheme."

But if you simply can't let go of your stash of red, green and gold tinsel (or other colours you may have collected of the years), that's ok as there might be a way around it.

Approach with caution is the best course of action, and make sure there's plenty of space between each layer.

David Sumner, online sales manager at Christmas Tree World, also told the publication: "Layering it diagonally instead of horizontally also helps to maintain some elegance while still making the tree pop."

Other things to consider include swapping your angel for a star which looks more elegant and classy, and if using baubles, use a range of sizes and make sure you go all out.

And stick to a colour scheme, always stick to a colour scheme.
