I’m an interiors expert and these are the 12 hacks to create more space in your house on a budget

Most homes are in dire need of more storage.

But with little space it can be hard to make the most of what you do have.

You might be forgetting about some spaces in your home that with minimal DIY skills can be transformed to hide away all the extra stuff you can't part with.

Vertical spacing

While you might not have a lot of floor space, you will have loads of vertical room.

It's important to utilise this space with shelving if you want more storage.

Just be carful not to overcrowd your walls, as this will make it look cluttered, floating shelves are a great way to get around this.

Multifunctional furniture

Rebecca Snowden, Interior Style Advisor at Furniture and Choice, shared: "Using multifunctional furniture is key for maximising storage space and keeping unnecessary clutter out of sight and out of mind."

When picking furniture opt for designs with added storage, like ottoman beds and seating that have somewhere to store things you don't always need out.

You can take this a step further and invest in pull out tables for when you have guests over, laundry bins that double as a chair and more.

Use your doors

It's easy to forget about the storage possibilities that your doors have.

With one in every room, utilising them with hooks for coats, hanging shoe storage or bathroom essentails.

Remember corners

If you are transforming an especially small room, don't bother with normal shelves.

They might look great in larger spaces but will feel weird and clunky in your box room.

Instead go for a corner shelving unit, which will maximise storage without taking up unnecessary room.

Use light colours

If you want to make a room look bigger one of the best things you can do it give it a fresh coat of white paint.

Light colours reflect light well, meaning they'll give the illusion of a bigger room.

Declutter

It's time for a spring clean anyway, so go the extra mile and get rid of the junk you've been holding on to.

All of your clutter can build up quickly, making your home look more cramped than it actually is.

Keep on top of the mess with a weekly sort out, and be realistic about what you need to hang on to.

Use mirrors

Similarly to light colours, mirrors can give the illusion of more space.

Having multiple mirrors in a space can reflect light and make it seem like there's more space than there really it.

If you want to be extra savvy, try a mirrored cabinet to get more storage too.

Bring in a bench

Narrow hallways might be too thin for standard furniture, but if you want to create a chic look a bench can be a great alterative.

You can utilise the underneath for storage while adding extra seating.

The possibilities are endless.

Don't forget about your curtains

Raising your curtain rod can create the illusion of taller ceilings.

While this trick wont actually give you any more space, the impact the illusion will create will fool guests into thinking the room is bigger than it is.

Hang more

Avoid taking up precious floor and cupboard space and hang what you can.

Wall hooks for coats, bags and umbrellas will instantly give hallways and narrow spaces more room to work with.

Hanging plants and lights from the ceiling is also a great trick to bring attention upwards, creating the illusion of more space.

Involve your kids

Old toys, children's books and clothes can overwhelm your home.

Get them involved by creating a dedicated space for them to put away their toys.

Try labelling boxes with each child's name so they know exactly where their stuff goes.

DIY what you have

You don't have to be a DIY expert to transform furniture in your home.
