Kate Middleton has been married to Prince William since April 2011. The Duke of Cambridge is second in line to the British throne behind Queen Elizabeth II, 94, and Prince Charles, 71.

This means it is likely Prince William will be King one day.

If this were to happen, Kate would probably take on the role of Queen Consort.

With this title she would have the same status as the King, but not the same political powers.

Kate has become confident in her royal role since joining the Royal Family.

From being rarely seen while dating Prince William, Kate has flourished as a working royal.

Speaking to Express.co.uk, stylist and lecturer at the Fashion Retail Academy in London Anthony McGrath suggested she has been subtly preparing for her future role.

The Duchess of Cambridge has used her changing style choices to show her position in Royal Family.

Anthony said: “As Kate transitioned to her role as the Duchess of Cambridge, her style inevitably evolved.

“Since Kate has been in the limelight she has always been somewhat of a conservative dresser, whether that was because she wanted to prove herself to the Royal Family or was her own personal style, who knows, but she was rarely seen in anything too risqué.

“However, since marrying Prince William and officially becoming a member of the Royal Family, her outfits have certainly become more modest.”

There are some royal style rules that are followed by those in the family.

For example, royal women are reportedly encouraged to wear tights and ditch heels that are too high.

Dresses are thought to be prefered over trousers and short hemlines are banned.

The expert suggested Kate has followed these rules and favoured a conservative dress sense.

This is something she has managed to hone since joining the Royal Family and could explain her growing role.

“She had to leave behind the flirty and floaty dress, thigh-skimming minis and low-cut evening gowns,” he added.

“Instead, she introduced skirt suits and coat dresses, which have since become staple items in her wardrobe and are frequently her go-to looks for public engagements.

“She also introduced an array of A-lines dresses in various different colours, decorative hats for formal events and closed-toe shoes. Stockings also became a ‘must’ every time she wore an outfit that bared her legs.”

While Kate may show her respect for the Royal Family with well thought out fashion choices, her wardrobe is desired by many.

Items worn by the Duchess will often sell-out quickly and she has managed to build a signature style that is modest yet on-trend.

This has helped the royal show her own style while also preparing for her changing royal status.

Anthony added: “While she now most certainly has a more demure, Duchess-worthy wardrobe, we must give her credit for staying true to who she has and not moulding herself into something else entirely.

“Slowly, but surely, she has refined her style over the years and her style is without a doubt, suitable for a future Queen.”
