Meghan Markle surprised Prince Harry on his birthday by 'setting up tent in the garden to recreate their Botswana trip’

MEGHAN Markle surprised Prince Harry on his 35th birthday last year by “recreating” the Botswana holiday where they “fell in love”, according to a source.

The Duchess of Sussex, 38, set up a tent and sleeping bags in the garden of their former home Frogmore Cottage, for his September 15 birthday.

A source told People: “Last year, for Harry's birthday, Meghan recreated their Botswana camping adventures in their backyard.

“It's a place that means so much to them — and to Harry in particular — so Meghan wanted to bring that happy place to him on his day so she set up a tent, got sleeping bags, cooked dinner and recreated Botswana where they fell in love.”

The couple were living in Windsor at the time with their son Archie, and went on their first family royal tour to Africa a few weeks later.

During the trip, they visited Botswana, South Africa, Angola and Malawi and Archie even got to meet Archbishop Demond Tutu.

Botswana holds meaning for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, as they jetted off to the country for a romantic African holiday on her 36th birthdayin 2017.

For Meghan's first ever safari, the pair stayed in a luxurious tented bush camp at Meno a Kwena boasting incredible views over the Boteti River and African bush.

“I fell in love in a tent in Africa,” Harry told his close friends.

He reminisced to BBC: “We camped out with each other under the stars.

"She came and joined me for five days out there, which was absolutely fantastic. So then we were really by ourselves, which was crucial to me to make sure that we had a chance to know each other.”

The trip even meant so much that Harry sourced the diamond in Meghan's engagement ring from Botswana – the world's biggest producer.

Botswana, a country of around two million spread over an area the size of France, has always been important to Harry.

He first visited when he was 13, two months after his mother Princess Diana died, and he has returned several times for leisure and charity work.

This follows the couple celebrating their second wedding anniversary earlier this week, and giving each other creative cotton-themed presents.

They are currently self-isolating in LA at Tyler Perry's £15million mansion with Archie.
