Mum uses Poundland car paint to revamp her bland kitchen and the £28 makeover looks so good people ask her to do theirs

A MUM has revealed how she gave her kitchen a budget makeover for just £28 using B&Q self-adhesive marble film and Poundland car wheel spray paint.

Jodie Mclachlan, 20, from Witham in Essex, said she “hated” her old kitchen as she felt it was “so dull” and “plain” – she was determined to make it a room she would enjoy spending time in.

The stay-at-home mum, who has a three-year-old little boy, spent less than two days transforming her old kitchen on a cheap budget into a modern new space.

Jodie shared the makeover on Facebook: “I cannot stress how IN LOVE I am with how this turned out, this was definitely a fun DIY project.

“I love my new kitchen. Next DIY is definitely the tiles!”

The mother said the kitchen was the one room in her house that she always hated being in so was keen to make it look stylish and modern.

Jodie transformed the whole kitchen by ditching the wooden-coloured cupboards, old-fashioned monochrome tiling and dull black worktops for sleek grey cupboards, fancy marble-style worktops and statement black tiles.

She started by painting the cupboard grey with leftover paint after sanding them down and removing the handles.

She used cheap tile stickers, tyre spray paint, leftover DIY tools from previous home projects as well as B&Q vinyl.

She said: “I then spray painted the handles black to tie in with the tiles on the walls.

“I used four £5 rolls of self adhesive marble film and carefully stuck it over the old dark work surfaces.

“I hated the kitchen before, it was so dull and plain. I’m in the kitchen a lot, I have to cook meals for myself and my son so I wanted a room that I actually enjoyed being in.

“I’d just finished painting a pattern on the living room wall and thought it’d be a lovely colour to use in the kitchen.”

Jodie said she rarely gets much time to herself as her toddler is ‘very hyper’ and requires a lot of attention – so she set to work on the kitchen makeover when he was asleep.

She said out-of-the-blue she started painting when her little boy was sleeping and in hindsight, she is so happy she picked up the paintbrush.

The budget makeover cost just £28 – as Jodie picked up £1 car wheel spray paint from Poundland, a pack of 50 tile stickers from Amazon for £5.99, four rolls of self-adhesive film from B&Q for £20 and clear sealant for a £1.

She added: “I removed the handles and doors off every single cupboard, spray painted the handles black using car wheel paint and let them dry.

“While they were drying I sanded the cupboards down, lay some plastic sheets on the floor and started painting them.

“The colour came out really well and they all had second coats once the first was dry.

“I then re-attached the handles and cupboards back where they previously were and absolutely fell in love – but something still made me dislike the kitchen!

“I started looking on the B&Q website and found a marble effect self-adhesive film and ordered four rolls for only £5 each.”

Jodie said the self-adhesive film arrived the following day so she removed everything from the surfaces and thoroughly cleaned everything so nothing would stick to the film or create lumps.

She then removed the silver ends of the surfaces so that the film would be able to tuck neatly underneath.

Once everywhere was clean, the mum cut the film to shape – ensuring she cut around the sink accurately. She said it was definitely hard work but “fairly manageable.”

Jodie added: “My whole kitchen took four rolls exactly with none to spare. It took around a day and a half, but it would have been finished sooner if I’d ordered the film before starting.

“I did it all by myself while my son was asleep so there were no distractions! The easiest parts were painting and taking the cupboard on and off.

“But the harder parts were definitely trying to cut out the sink and add clear sealant around the edges so that no water could get underneath.

“I’m so happy with the results, the fact it took less than 2 days, less than £50 and I could do it while my son was asleep with no assistance – that’s amazing!”

Jodie posted her incredible budget transformation on social media and received lots of likes and comments from friends, family and strangers praising her efforts.

She also shared the results in a budget DIY group – where one woman was left so impressed she even asked Jodie to help her complete her home DIY projects.

Jodie explained: “One woman has asked me for help doing her kitchen!

“Lots of people have been asking me where the products were from, how easy it was and telling me that it looks really good.”

One user congratulated Jodie, writing: “Looks amazing!”

Another shared: “Amazing for under £50!”

Meanwhile a third replied: “Where did you get the spray paint please? The finish looks really good.”

To which Jodie revealed: “Poundland – it’s really good! It’s car tyre spray paint!”
