Reason Princess Kate is sometimes seen without her engagement ring

Kate, Princess of Wales was given a beautiful sapphire and diamond engagement ring from Prince William in 2010, and over the years, there have been a handful of times she has been seen without it. According to a jewellery expert, there is a good reason why Kate removes her engagement ring.

The most recent time Kate stepped out without her iconic jewel was last summer when she attended the Commonwealth Games swimming trials in Birmingham.

For the occasion, she wore an all-white outfit consisting of an Alexander McQueen suit jacket, with coordinating trousers and a simple white t-shirt underneath.

She chose a pair of Mappin and Webb Empress Diamond Earrings in white gold and the matching Empress Diamond Necklace in white gold, but no engagement ring, instead her simple gold wedding band.

According to Steven Stone, the reason for Kate removing her engagement ring is “likely to be down to health and safety” and “royal fans were left wondering where her engagement ring was” considering she was observing the swimming trials with Prince William and Princess Charlotte.

The day before, however, Kate was in Plymouth to take part in a Team Great Britain race against New Zealand.

She arrived in a pair of shorts and a Breton stripe jumper with her engagement ring on her fourth finger.

But by the time she had changed into a wet suit and life jacket, she had removed her engagement ring.

“Kate typically removes her engagement ring whenever she is taking part in physical activities and sports or when there is a greater risk that the ring could become damaged or lost,” the Diamond experts added.

Kate also removes her engagement rings for hospital visits – with her visit to Evelina Children’s Hospital in 2020 and Great Ormond Street in 2018 noted.

At the time Kensington Palace explained Kate had removed her accessories because she was visiting the children’s wards, and, as such, it was important for the royal to remove any potential hygiene hazards.

Kate’s engagement ring, which was formerly Princess Diana’s, features a 12-carat Ceylon sapphire, originating from Sri Lanka.

It is the most valuable royal engagement ring, with Steven Stone experts estimating it to be worth a staggering £390,000.

Kate is not the only royal to remove her engagement ring on occasion, Queen Letizia of Spain, Meghan Markle, Princess Diana and Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh have all been seen without their engagement rings over the years.

Queen Letizia got engaged to Prince Felipe of Spain in 2003 and was married less than a year later.

Since her engagement, the Queen of Spain has rarely been spotted wearing her engagement ring in public. Instead, she regularly opts to wear her Karen Hallam gold-plated ring.

Whilst attending the Commonwealth Day service with the Queen at Westminster Abbey in 2019, Meghan was spotted without her sentimental engagement ring.

The believed reason for this was due to her fingers swelling during the final stages of her pregnancy with Archie.

Princess Diana also removed her engagement ring when she was pregnant with Prince William in 1982, and instead wore just her gold wedding band.

Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh, on the other hand, removed her engagement rings when it came to the end of lockdown in 2020.

The former Countess of Wessex found herself incredibly busy as she returned to royal engagements and supporting her various patronages, and the public health advice at the time was to wash hands regularly and thoroughly.
