Artist whose edgy ceramic figures and paintings are beloved by celebs

Artist creates playful ceramics by adding modern touches like Adidas hoodies and McDonald’s bags to trinkets found in charity shops – and Alan Carr and Sophie Ellis-Bextor are fans

  • Singer Sophie Ellis-Bextor, Alan Carr and Mark Ronson are among her fans
  • Haus of Lucy has worked with Adidas, Footlocker and teased collab with Primark

An artist has revealed how she gives traditional ceramic figurines a modern edge by adding contemporary touches like an Adidas hoodie or a miniature McDonald’s takeaway bag.

Lucy Bryant, of London, taught herself how to use Fimo, plasticine-like clay which you can oven bake, so she could modify ceramics and other trinkets she found in charity shops.

She explained she had spent years doodling in her free time and came up with the idea of expanding into Fimo while working as a magazine editor.

Since starting her brand, Haus of Lucy, in 2019, Lucy has won over thousands of fans including Mark Ronson, Sophie Ellis-Bextor and Alan Carr.

Lucy, pictured, started making the figurines in 2017 and quickly turned it into a business that’s growing in popularity

Alan was gifted a China plate she made using pictures of Gemma Collins, and later visited her shop himself to buy more items.

Singer Sophie Ellis-Bextor bought a martingale adorned with crests of fast-food joints like McDonald’s and KFC.

Meanwhile, music producer Mark Ronson bought three ceramics, including one he personally messaged Lucy about on Instagram, called The Recital.

Lucy explained her first objective was to make herself laugh, and that if she did that, the figurine was a success.

Brands have caught on too, and Lucy has worked with Adidas and Footlocker, and is working on a project with Primark, who contacted Lucy after she added some bags from the low-cost brand to prints and figurines.

Some of Lucy’s 2020 figurines were Covid-19-related, like this tourist enjoying a few drinks and reading a book away from the UK’s lockdown in Magaluf

Lucy also works with prints and made this portrait of Mary, Jesus and Baby Shark in a nod to the popular kid’s song

The artist adds a modern touch to the ceramics by making the items with plasticine and baking it in her oven. On this, she added the jumper and the bag
