Hilary Duff says she was typecast for years after ‘Lizzie McGuire’
Hilary Duff says it was hard for her to land different types of acting roles after she starred in Disney’s “Lizzie McGuire.”
“I definitely went through big frustrations of being like, ‘Why can I not get a shot at being someone else?’” Duff, 33, recently told Cosmopolitan. “Not that I want to dog every casting director out there, but there’s a very small handful of people who are character actors and can be hired for roles that are truly different from one another. From age 21 to 25, before I became a mom, there was a lot of frustration.”
She added that even if an audition went well, her “Lizzie McGuire” legacy seemed to overshadow her talent.
“I would get to producer callback and they’d be like, ‘She’s so great and she gave us the best reading and blah blah blah, but she’s Hilary Duff…’” she said.
Over the years, the “Younger” star has moved past the frustrations with how her Disney role has defined her career.
This is why Duff — who shares 1-year-old Banks with husband Matthew Koma and 8-year-old Luca from a previous relationship — was finally ready to sign on for a reboot of the early 2000s TV show.
“They asked me for years and years: ‘Let’s do a reboot, let’s do a reboot,’ and I was like, ‘No, no, no,’” she said. “Finally, last year, I was like, ‘I feel ready.’”
She added, “It just doesn’t annoy me any more when people refer to me as Lizzie McGuire or say that was my biggest role, because it paved the way for all the other roads I’ve been able to take.”
Unfortunately, the reboot has since been put on an indefinite hold after the showrunner abruptly exited the series in January 2020. At the time, Duff said she felt a responsibility to fans and would be doing a “disservice to everyone by limiting the realities of a 30 year old’s journey to live under the ceiling of a PG rating.”
The actress also asked Disney to let them take the show to another network, but nothing has been decided yet.
