Is Dave Chappelle Filming Another Netflix Special?
We don’t know about you, but we’re ready for new content from Dave Chappelle. The Sticks and Stones comedian has not put out anything since 8:46, a Netflix special released in June that had a more serious tone instead of Chappelle’s usual panache and humor. But maybe there’s more on the way?
Throughout 2020, Chappelle has put on a series of shows in his city, making us wonder: Is Dave Chappelle filming another Netflix special? Let’s discuss, below.
Dave Chappelle has been putting on shows over the summer of 2020
For months, Chappelle has been hosting socially-distanced comedy shows in Yellow Springs, Ohio, where he lives with his wife and children.
The series is branded as Dave Chappelle & Friends: An Intimate Socially Distanced Affair and has brought all kinds of people, including celebrities David Letterman, Jon Stewart, Chris Rock, Tiffany Haddish, Michelle Wolf, John Mayer, Common, Talib Kweli, Michael Che, Common, Sarah Silverman, Jon Hamm, and Erykah Badu, per Vulture.
Though Chappelle has not said anything regarding the possibility of a new Netflix special, Vulture adds:
If Instagram posts by attendees are to be believed, Chappelle has a plan to take advantage of all these guests by taping the live shows for … something. Another Netflix special?
It’s unclear what that might look like, but the outlet mentions that Chappelle could be shooting a project similar to his 2005 documentary Block Party, which followed the comedian and the lead-up to a block party he threw in 2004 in Brooklyn, New York. When contacted for comment, Netflix reportedly did not respond.
Dave Chappelle, however, does have a deal to create projects for Netflix
Chappelle inked a deal with Netflix in 2016 to release three comedy specials. Terms of the deal included the release of two never-before-seen specials from his comedy fault The Age of Spin and Deep in the Heart of Texas and an original that wound up being 2017’s Equanimity (via The Hollywood Reporter). But Chappelle has also put out other programs through the platform, including 2017’s The Bird Revelation, 2019’s Sticks and Stones, and 2020’s 8:46.
Many of the specials have released to widespread backlash for their subject matter. But Chappelle clearly hasn’t let it get to him. After winning several awards for Sticks and Stones at the 2020 Creative Arts Emmy Awards in September, Chappelle used the moment to laugh at and hit back at his critics.
“Boy, this comes as a complete surprise. I mean, I read all the reviews and they said so many terrible things. That they were embarrassed for me. That I lost my way and wasn’t even worth watching,” he said (via Rolling Stone). “I hope all you critics learn from this. This is a teachable moment. Shut the f*ck up forever.”
It was a moment that had fans in stitches as they wait for more from the Half Baked actor.
