KFC taste testers try new vegan burger and say whether they’d make the swap

This Veganuary , many are swapping out their favourite dishes for plant-based alternatives.

But some worry that vegan options will never compare to meat.

We’ve been very intrigued about KFC ’s Zero Chicken burger at Daily Star HQ.

As the fast food giant is so famed for its fried chicken, creating an alternative was always going to be tricky.

But they still gave it a go, coating QUORN fillets in its famous 11 Herbs and Spices, frying and then putting it into a sesame bun with fresh lettuce and vegan mayo.

So is the plant-based burger just as good as its meaty rival? Here at Daily Star Online, we conducted a taste test to find out.

Lifestyle reporters Christine and Sophie tried out the new fast food item.

The pair tucked into the faux-fried chicken – and both were pretty impressed with what they tasted.

Self-confessed carnivore Christine was a little sceptical when she first opened the box.

But after a few bites of the burger, she soon came around.

While the lifestyle lass won’t be ditching fried chicken for the plant-based alternative any time soon, she’s very pleased with what she tried.

Christine said: “It tastes like chicken. It tastes really good.

“In fact, I don’t even think people could tell the difference…

“I know deep down that the chicken’s not there – but it bangs.”

Sophie was equally impressed with the new KFC menu item – but unlike her colleague, she said she’d continue to make the swap in the future.

While she noted the taste of the burger was a little spongier than the chicken sandwich, she was pleased with the overall experience.

Sophie added: “It’s good, it does have that KFC spices flavour.

“You can, I think, tell that it’s Quorn because it has that slightly spongier taste that Quorn’s known for.

“But I like that in Quorn…

“It’s good, I’d get that instead of KFC chicken even after Veganuary is over to be honest.

“It’s animal free and tastes really good, so why wouldn’t you?”
