Many of us choose to turn off the read receipts on our mobile phones to give us a better excuse for not immediately replying to messages.
After all, there’s nothing worse than seeing that familiar blue double-tick on WhatsApp, or the iMessage timestamp pop up to indicate the person has received and read our text and actively chosen not to respond.
This is especially true when it comes to dating – but for one man from New York, being ghosted on this occasion would probably have been the preferable option.
Eric Dimitratos, 33, who works in digital marketing, shared a recent exchange he had with a man he went on a first date with on Twitter – and it’s been branded ‘horror film dating’ by fellow tweeters.

In the screengrab of the post-date conversation, the man asks Eric to ‘do him a favor’ and ‘turn on read receipts’ – complete with instructions on how to do so.
Baffled, Eric replies: ‘What!?!’
He captioned his tweet yesterday: ‘Goes on first date, scared he’ll ghost but instead gets this test.’
It went viral in less than 24 hours, notching up 1,200 retweets and over 14,500 likes, as well as generating 943 comments.

Many Twitter users advised Eric to run a mile, using appropriate gifs, while one branded the date’s behavior ‘some controlling cray-cray’.
One tweeted: ‘This is the part of the crime documentary where the steely narrator intones something very ominous, and we cut to commercial.’
Another wrote: ‘As someone who watches a truly unhealthy amount of Investigation Discovery, I can authoritatively give your tweet an A+.’

‘Well at least this trend has helped me for once,’ added another. ‘I never knew read receipts could be on a per contact basis.’
Asked if there was a follow-up, Eric admitted: ‘It’s no love story. Or rom-com.’
Not surprising really; as one Twitter user pointed out, this is more like ‘horror film dating’.
