Morrisons to replace all plastic carrier bags with paper ones that cost 30p

Morrisons is swapping plastic bags for life for reusable paper ones instead.

In an attempt to be more environmentally friendly, supermarket bosses plan to charge 30p for these recyclable alternatives.

This is because many customers use plastic “bags for life” as single-use products that go straight into landfill.

Some may worry that paper bags are too flimsy to use – but according to the supermarket, they’re actually strong enough to hold 16kg each.

If shoppers don't like they paper bags, they can buy jute, cotton and reusable woven alternatives instead.

These cost £2.50, £1.50 and 60p respectively.

Customers who can’t part with their plastic bags also have the option to bring their own when they’re doing their grocery shops.

Morrisons is yet to set a date for when the new recyclable bags will be rolled out in supermarkets.

But according to boss David Potts, shoppers are “ready” for the change to be made.

He said: "We believe customers are ready to stop using plastic carrier bags as they want to reduce the amount of plastic they have in their lives and keep it out of the environment.

"We know that many are taking reusable bags back to store and if they forget these, we have paper bags that are tough, convenient and a reuseable alternative."

Morrisons bosses believe its shoppers use approximately 90million bags for life a year.

They estimate that replacing these products from stores could remove 3,510 tonnes of plastic a year.

The supermarket claims to have eliminated or recycled 9,000 tonnes of plastic.

It also reckons its going to hit target to cut plastic reduction by 50% by 2025.
