Mum lost in mountains for 4 days ran from ‘armed man who threatened to rape her’

A mum who got lost in the Californian mountains for four days claimed her nightmare started when she ran from a man armed with a knife who threatened to rape her.

Sheryl Powell, 60, was enjoying a weekend with her husband John in the White Mountains, California.

The mum-of-two vanished while the couple prepared to set up camp for the weekend at the Grandview Campground.

Search teams eventually found Sheryl over two miles from where she was last seen after they heard her dog, Miley, barking.

Describing her horrific ordeal, Sheryl said she was taking Miley for a walk in the area where she and John planned to set up camp when a man approached her and threatened her with a knife.

She said the 'burly, bald-headed man with tanned skin' approached her and threatened to kill Miley then her if she didn't follow his instructions.

Sheryl said the man told her, "First thing that's going to happen here is I'm going to use this knife on your dog.

"Then if you don't let me have my way with you, I'll use it on you."

Sheryl then ran for her life down a hill with her dog while the man terrifyingly followed her.

The mum said she never saw him again after the first encounter, but had become disorientated during her desperate escape.

She went on to walk through the night to avoid getting dehydrated and running into snakes.
