Mum’s genius method to store avocados ensures they don’t turn brown

A savvy mum has been praised for her innovative trick to stop avocados from turning brown before anyone gets a chance to eat them.

Avocado packs a wide range of nutrients, making it a top superfood, but the unpredictable rate at which it browns can present an inconvenience.

Thankfully, the creator of the Facebook page ‘Slow Cooker Recipes and Tops’ has discovered the ultimate food storage hack to preserve the freshness of avocados.

“This is a little trick I’ve been doing with avocados,” she shared in the clip. “I heard that you can buy it frozen, but could never find it anywhere. So I thought, ‘Why not freeze it myself? It works incredibly well.

The content creator claims you can prevent the fruit from browning entirely if you follow her instructions.

After buying a fresh avocado, cut it in half, and remove the pit. Peel off the skin and cut the flesh into chunks. The mum’s method involves laying out the avocado slices on a tray lined with parchment paper and freezing them.

After one day, she collects the frozen slices into a bag and puts them back in the freezer. This prevents the fruit pieces from sticking together and allows for easy use one slice at a time.

She says the avocados stay green and are perfect for smoothies and sandwiched, garnering a lot of praise from others who had never thought to freeze the fruit before. One person wrote: “I had no idea it froze.”

Another exclaimed: “This will change my life! I bought frozen avocado and it was horrible.”

A third person found it to be the ideal solution to their squishy avocado problems.

The trick comes soon after TikTok users were warned about a viral hack of storing the fruit in water to prolong freshness.

The trick, which encourages people to submerge avocados in water to prevent browning, can allow listeria to permeate the fleshy pulp beneath the skin.

Carly Sedlacek, a registered dietitian, explained: “If you put your avocado in water, you’re really just dropping it into a breeding ground for any bacteria that are present.

“This TikTok hack is a recipe for foodborne illness. It’s very, very bad.”
